Yes--nice meeting you, sorry I couldn't get you on a 14, but at least you got to go and see the boats.

My pole is 10 1/2 feet long. I had trouble making it 10 feet like Bob's because my clew was dragging on the front beam. Even with the extra few inches, I still had it too low unless I put a LOT of tension on the Hooter halyard.

I won't have mine set up until the weekend after next, so I probably won't be any help. Besides, I would go with Bob's proven rig over mine!

I'm a bit curious why the tri-radial Pentex headsail costs less than the cross-cut Dacron 2.2oz version... while the Pentex mainsail is almost double the cost of the Dacron 4.0oz version.

Mast Rake is 8" behind the rear beam using a plumb.

Pole is 10' x 2" alum tubing.

Reacher tang is 10" below the top of the extrusion.

Thanks a lot, Bob! I have another question, this time regarding the reacher furler. What furling system do you use, and where can I get one? The drum that was on the H14T I'm using seems pretty well shot, ditto for the TheMightyHobie18 parts boat's drum.

I used two different types. One can be found at Murrays:
http://www.murrays.com/archive/50.pdf (see "B") but you have to also order the fairlead. It is actually jut a strip of metal that attaches to the pin on the bottom of the drum and it has a hole near the top to guide the furling line into the drum. Murray's probably doesn't stock them, but I can get you a picture.

I wouldn't use the TheMightyHobie18 furler because it is a below-bridle furler and would be difficult to mount correctly.

Attached is a pic of the standard Harken furler with the fairlead. You really have to either have some kind of fairlead or a closed bail like Berny suggested. If not, the angle isn't right and the line gets wrapped up all wrong..

I wasn't trying to take business away from you--especially on your site, I just didn't know you had the parts. I really was just looking for pictures to show the part I was talking about..

I like the under-the-bridle furlers.

The Hobie 18 furler, while physically kind of large, has a rebuild kit that will make an old one like new (Hobie #61900900, $33.25). It has an interesting "pass through" chainplate adjuster to tension the rig at the forestay. I've seen several setups with a swivel attached to that plate BELOW that furler so you can use it for a mid-pole support for a spin pole.

Harken now has a smaller "under" model, too (H454).

Rick, the furler you referred to does not have just a fairlead as mentioned, it has the fairlead AND a camcleat ON the furler. (See attached photo) Just how high would you have to raise/lower your arm to cleat and uncleat this line if you are sitting 10-12 feet away from the spinpole end where the cleat is? I'm used to the cleat on the mainbeam.

I saw that and thought that if I were to buy it, I would take the cam cleat off the furler and install it on the front beam to use as the cleat for the furling line. Then, I would put a padeye (in place of the cam cleat) on the bracket sticking out of the furler to act as a fairlead. Just reusing parts..

I have been running two back-to-back seminars and only see my computer for an hour a day, so linked you to the wrong furler.
Nonetheless, we have them all on the site, and if not actually listed, we still have them -- adding items daily since last April and over 4000 items and double that to come.

The Ronstan RF76 furler and RF78/79 swivel is a nice light compact setup used here almost exclusively on 14ft cat headsails and they are quite reasonably priced too.
I just bought a spare one off my mate for $Aus20 so I'm a happy little chappy.

Thanks for the heads-up on the furler rebuild kits. I can rebuild the two I've got and use them on something else (like my next F14)

The simplest furler fairlead is shown in a picture on page 52 of the OLD (2001-2002) Murrays catalogue. It is just a simple $9 tang that mounts to the lower fork of any Harken furler. In the newer (2003-3004) catalogue the photo is gone(?) and there's just a listing on page 50 (part #25-1066). Neither Harken nor Rick lists this number so I don't know who makes it but for $9 you can't go wrong.
