Just playing around with the idea of flying a US flag from my Hobie. Anyone had any luck with a rigging design that will cope with the occasional capsize and keep the flag in decent condition?

Most that I see fly a small flag that is attached to two batten ties. It looks good, seems pretty stable, and shouldn't be an issue during a capsize.

Good Luck,

I agree with Lance's comments. I use a 12

x 18

flag on my Hobie 16. It may seem small up close, however, when you look at it from a few steps back, the size is just right. Tie the flag off between the battons. About 2/3 up the sail is the best place, one panel below the Hobie Cat trademark.

According to the

Annapolis Book of Seamanship

in order to determine the correct flag size, the rule of thumb is for every foot of boat, you have one inch of flag. Therefore, the 12

x 18

is perfect for you. Capsizes will not be a problem.
