[#25478]

There are two US teams entered in this event with team Robbie Daniel/Gary Chu in eighth after the first day. Team John Casey/Claske Boschma are currently 24 after the first day in a very tough field.

The younger Booth is sailing with Calfornian Jacques Bernier in tenth. All sailors are or were Florida residents at one time. It must be something in the water.

The host is doing a nice job with updates and timely results, if you're interested have a look.

The forecast for today is more light winds however tomorrow promises to be a bit more lively.

Oh, the black flag was brought out amost immediatly and yes some top teams got hit. Even though it's been a light air affair so far it hasn't been shy with the drama.

I believe the music was used in the Pirates of the Carribean movies. No idea what it's called though.

Well I guess the results reckon that Carolijn Brouwer and Elke Delnooz are male. Last time I saw them they both looked pretty female to me.

Frederique Pfeiffer and Françoise Dettling are an all female crew. A couple of tough French ladies who have kicked my but a few times on their distinctive bright red Hobie Tiger.

There look to be a few more female skippers lower in the rankings as well. Unless Sarah is a popular boys name in England <img src="<>/smile.gif" alt="smile" title="smile" height="15" width="15" />

Chris.

the prescribed International F18 course is 2 laps.

Anyone that survived this morning is doing well. They are having a break ashore now to get their breath back before a couple more races this afternoon to get the qualifiers finished [I assume].

Any idea how they get the results on the net so quick? Its almost real time. Its not helping me get any work done atall this morning. I've got one son doing this and one son racing in Brazil, so i had better just give up work this week and watch the net all day!

That's because it IS realtime, they're wearing GPS trackers <img src="<>/grin.gif" alt="grin" title="grin" height="15" width="15" />
http://www.f18worlds2009.com/tracking

I recall reading somewhere that there is a maximum of 5 races max per day (which makes sense I guess, 5 races in 20+ knots is very hard work).

The qualifiers are finished now since they already did 2 races on Monday (2+4=6 races).
It looks like the wind is slightly offshore, I bet they are hitting ridicilous speeds going downwind in that flat water.

Each boat has only done 4 races each so 2 more are needed

I thought that only the top 10 are carrying trackers, it would explain it if they had them on every boat tho'

You are right, they only did 2 races today (must learn to read!).
No more races today though:

15:10 No further races. All races are cancelled for today.

Not exactly. Could be 3:

- windward/leeward courses
- offset mark (minimum 70° to the wind direction) to be rounded after the windward mark
- gate at the leeward mark
- 2 or 3 rounds, target time for the first boat to finish : 60 minutes. Longer or shorter actual duration for a race will not be ground for redress.

Anyone know who the PRO is for this?

Also, interesting math. 4 races in 3 hours when the target time is 60 minutes. We must be missing some critical info.

Black flag starts are no fun for the RC, either.

Aren't they running multiple courses?

The races are about 37 minutes for the first boat and 57 for the last. A 'target' is more a guideline than a rule in my opinion. 37 minutes per race isn't a bad length of time.

You're welcome to your opinion, but I think we're missing some info.

I agree that it's a guideline. But, if you tell sailors a target time, they will expect you to be very close to that, especially at this level. They will expect you to set and adjust the course as needed to meet it. If you don't, you're setting yourself up for a disgruntled fleet, at a minimum. Time-consuming redress hearings, worst-case.

Anything less than 50 minutes for a catamaran regatta of this magnitude is certainly not sufficient. That would be the opinion of all of the top ROs that I know, and the top sailors as well.

BTW, target time is for the first boat to finish.

The statements above are generalizations, but, I repeat, I am not going to criticize this particular event at this distance without more info.

Mike
