Don't answer, don't argue. That's not my purpose in this reply here.

Please, just think about, consider, this:

What if:

-- The hype about climate change is CORRECT.
Nobody believes it (like y'all don't.)
We keep on with our standard of living.
What happens? The dire predictions come true. Yes, the earth will live, renew. It has millions and millions of years. But the most endangered species of all will be HUMANS.
It's pretty well documented that humans haven't been around for particularly long compared to the existence of life itself, so yeah, the earth goes on, but we sure don't. If we don't kill each other over the dwindling resources, the violent climatic events will get us.

Okay, scenario two:
--The hype about climate change is INCORRECT.
Nobody believes it (like y'all don't.)
We keep on with our standard of living.
What happens? Nothing. Except, we'll be killing each other over the dwindling resources like we do now. Status quo.

Okay, scenario three:
-The hype about climate change is CORRECT.
EVERYBODY believes it.
We change our standard of living to be more sustainable.
What happens?
We've saved ourselves buttloads of money, we aren't dependent on anyone but ourselves, and the future is pretty bright, even if we sorta miss them big ol SUVs.

Okay, scenario four, the most interesting one:
-The hype about climate change is INCORRECT.
EVERYBODY believes it IS gonna happen anyway.
We change our standard of living to be more sustainable.
What happens?
We've saved ourselves buttloads of money, we aren't dependent on anyone but ourselves, and the future is pretty bright, even if we sorta miss them big ol SUVs.

My point here? If the climate changers are wrong, and we go ahead and live sustainably as if they weren't, well then we have nothing to lose. Woe frickin' betide us all, though, if the climate changers are right and we have done nothing. I figure it behooves us all to act prudently. I mean, I can live with the lifestyle change - it's not that big a deal, compared with the possibilities that face us.

Why should I change a DAMN THING about my lifestyle when I'm not convinced I'm doing anything to perpetuate global warming?

You think making me change all my lightbulbs in my house is going to make a lick of difference?

Get a life. Get out of mine.

Wow. But if we run out of oil what will we use to make high tech sails? I am sure they use some petroleum byproducts!

What about a new policy of full disclosure when we talk about this stuff? If anyone wants to participate you must list the types of cars/trucks you drive, what your monthly electric bill is, whether you recycle, what you do for a living, what stocks you own, what mutual funds you own in case one of them has an oil company in its portfolio, and who you voted for in the last 4 presidential elections and why.

Wow, you're attitude is really starting to surprise me. At first I thought it was just fun and games - but I'm really beginning to believe that you think this way. It's not that you don't believe in Global Warming (believe whatever you wish)...but the recklessness and harshness in your statements...

Jake, the attitude is being perpetuated by the constant brow-beating and unsolicited pontificating by people who feel its their moral obligation to make me feel guilty for living my life the way I do.

Especially on a site where such unwarranted advice is neither wanted nor appreciated. If I wanted my daily dose of global warming hysteria, I'd turn on any of the major news outlets and be convinced that my SUV's slot in the afterlife is at the right hand of Lucifer himself.

attitude with you people. I really have NO guilt about driving around in circles for 6 hours at a time if it means that I'm personally entertained due to the fact that I'm snubbing my nose at those who would force me to feel otherwise.

I agree with ya. I also agree that the climate is changing for whatever reason. I do what I can for my own sake and my children. Even though its like pissin on a forest fire. Hell I've even sold my suburban and got a mini-van (who would have ever guessed!!!) My Stiletto has a 4 stroke engine (used only about 4 gallons of fuel in the last year!).

The only beef I have is how the extremists jump and holler about the issues... Biggest is Mr. Gore as he flies in a private jet to give talks about how us AMERICANS need to stop being wasteful. Oh and lets not talk about his big butt houses.

Because the majority of us who do believe you are doing something to perpetuate global warming are going to elect people who will encourage you to change your ways - either through taxation or legislation. And I for one will enjoy you crying about as it happens.

Yes. It will save you money and reduce CO2 emissions. There is no single magic bullet to reducing CO2 emissions, but Compact Fluorescent Bulbs are a step in the right direction and could have a material effect on power consumption if widely adopted.

It’s not even about global warming…its clear that the climate is changing what variables influence this who the cuss knows? The fact is no one really knows…a lot of speculations. Personally I believe in global warming but that is because I have been studying the issue along with others through my first 2 years of university.
I believe the bigger issue is sustainability. Trying to lower ecological footprint I find is more important. The amount of water we use, electricity, and waste we produce. Countries in Europe have implement programs a couple years ago and are extremely successful. A good example is London, England and others including Austria, and Switzerland.
Here in Ontario an implementation started a few years ago with recycling programs and encouragement/media advertisements to reduce electrical use. A lot of households replaced their lights for more efficient ones, lowered the thermostat in the winter a little bit and reduced the A/C in the summer. The program has been working so well that the energy company is asking the government to raise electrical prices by 8-10%.
The point is that sooner rather then later countries will be running low on resources most importantly petrol products and water. Other resources like lumber and gas can definitely also be added to the list. The supply and demand machine will up the prices on these products and the public will be shitting bricks when they have to pay 5 dollars a liter.

Unlike everyone on the other side of the issue, I don't complain or whine when my side loses. I just vote for the guy (or gal) that thinks like I do, and see how the chips fall. Thats the way the system works.

Have fun with legislating increased taxes. If theres anymore of a political deathnail than increasing taxes, then I'm unaware of it.

FWIW, I have long known that Gore was a hypocrite. If nothing else, the fact that he has four children speaks loudly about his true convictions. I believe that Gore, like all of these politicians, is an [censored]. Something else y'all might want to think about, from Frank Herbert, the author of the DUNE books: Power doesn't corrupt, nor does absolute power corrupt absolutely. Power ATTRACTS the corruptible, and absolute power ATTRACTS the absolutely corruptible. I figure that's a fine descriptor of world politics. For more Herbert on the subject of things, read the preface to 'EYE'. It's real interesting stuff... But I really don't want to go there, and I didn't in my statement earlier.

As far as Americans being wasteful, in 1996 when I was in college I learned that the US uses some 25% of the world's resources whilst comprised of 2% of the world's population. I mean, this isn't new news.

I used to work in toxicology. Have a bachelor's in resource biology and biodiversity with emphasis on marine systems (USL 1998). We drive occasionally (towing the Fboat) a Ford F250 extended cab long wheelbase DIESEL (biodiesel) truck, and my daily driver is a Mercedes-Benz 300TD turbo(bio)diesel wagon (speaking of lifestyle, when we decided to go biodiesel, mine improved since i went from a Ford Ranger XLT truck to the Merc). Husband is in the oilfield, which is how we know about its wastage and excesses. His training is bachelor science engineering with specialization in mechanics (NMIMT 1995) and he works as a technical sales field guy for Smith International Neyrfor Turbodrilling. He thinks a lot about finding other uses for the turbodrill, like geothermal. Our house is something like 1300sqft, two bed two bath. It's all we need, because we aren't having children for which I'm sure our charming friend Maugan is grateful.

Instead of doing the usual regatta party at the YC, we took the entire regatta crowd to the race track last Sat night. We had a blast watching the Legends, stocks, and modifieds go round and round. Just like us, only faster...

Mike: ahhh!!!!! Damnit!! those bastards were racing until 10:30 pm, and then right back at it at 7:30AM on Sunday morning!

I thought 5 miles was far enough away from the race track. Guess I'm the dumbass for buying a house this close.
