I know this has been addressed before but the search resulted in 100's of unrelated posts.
I have a potential sail sponsor. We are looking at either a new head sail or a new Spin for my Stiletto 27. Of course he wants to put their logo/brand on it to advertise. So the question abound:
1.) Is it better to just get the sail then have the graphics applied?
2.) Do you have the sail made with the graphic printed?
3.) I have a newer head sail, so if I get him to spring for a new Spin, can I get a graphic to attach/apply to the head sail? And does the applied graphics hold up well?

Mylar sails are easy to apply graphics to. Pretty much any kind of vinyl adheres and stays well and any graphics shop can full color print and/or contour cut solid color vinyl graphics or you. (including mine). Dacron sails are a bit questionable in this regard. I've had vinyl hold up well and I've had it not do so well. The best bet for attempting vinyl on a dacron sail is to apply it when the sail is new and crispy. The sticky backed dacron (like is used for sail numbers) is the best choice on dacron sails. I can get it in 54" rolls but it's about four times the cost of vinyl.
For spinnakers, if you can't do the graphic with an old projector and a couple of different colored sharpies, order it with the graphic. Nylon (especially slippery coated nylons) are almost impossible to get anything to stick to.

I'm sure there is something - but the problem with dacron sail material is that it is usually treated with stiffeners and UV stabilizers that make sticking anything to it difficult. I've seen some guys paint mylar sails with automotive paint with flex additives and have decent success.

I'm very happy with how my graphics that were computer cut out of sticky back and stuck on a 6yo well used Dacron sail has lasted. The main thing with sticky back is to let the sun set it on the sail before you use the sail.
Back when I had sponsors, I had dacron sails (Hobie 16). A local sail maker did my graphics, using the dacron material Jake mentioned. That stuff never budged over many years of abuse.

Use whatever those gangstas use on the buildings around Ding's house. Seems that crap never comes off...
I gather from the consensus that if its going on a Spin that it would need to be done initially when the sail is built. I figured that the applied material would inhibit the working of the spin as they are usually so light anyway.
Probably the question now is, if the graphic is/would be applied to my existing head sail, would it stick.
