Magic Marine Harness Failure
had a positively wonderful day of sailing yesterday, putting the spin up for the first time on the six meter nacra.....what a ride.
i did have a structural failure on my harness and wanted to alert others to check it.... the crossbar failed right at the weld for the trap hook. this is about quarter inch stuff, and i was surprised when it gave way. i recommend checking the top rail of the crossbar right around the trap hook for cracks. this one was not bad as the other side held up ok.
I had a magic marine butt bucket, and replaced it this season. On mine, some of the fabric ripped out right where the wings attach to the butt. It was on the beginning on its second season.
I now have a Dakine Speed Seat harness built for windsurfing, and think it blows the magic marine butt bucket out of the water in every way. It's built better, and the hook works great because it's so nice and big. Although you wouldn't want to use it with the old dogbones as it's a little to big for that. However, it works perfectly with the big combination handles that Murrays sells. You don't even have to look to get hooked in, and no life jacket gets in the way because the hook sticks out so far.
I've often looked at the windsurfing gear and thought the catamaran folks could benefit quite a bit from their gear. It really is good stuff. Even things like they way they do batten caps and sail construction are items that we all could really benefit from.
