Nacra Spinnaker Questions
I am going to be buying parts soon to rig my new spinnaker for my Nacra 5.8. I will be launching from the tramp (possible upgrade to I20 style snuffer in the future, but not now).
For the halyard/tack line, from what I see, the best two options are as follows.
--Use separate lines for halyard and tack, and have the tack go to a cam-cleat on the front cross bar, while the halyard comes straight down to a pivoting exit block w/cam (Harken #291) that is on the mast. I have seen several pictures of Worrel boats (back when they used N6.0s) that used this.
--The second option is to use a single line that cleats to the front cross bar to do both, similar to what Hobie uses on their spinnaker kits and what someone posted a picture of a while back (at http:/
I am leaning towards the second, single line option, but I don’t know if the lack of separate control for the tack and halyard will make a difference in ability to trim the sail. The one less line on the tramp would sure be nice. What has been the experience of those of you who run spinnakers? Does the single line leave you with enough ability to properly trim a spinnaker?
The other thing I have questions on is the sheeting. The type of sail I am getting is similar to those used on the I20/Fox, which sheets at the side stays. How/where is the best place to attach the spin sheet block? I have seen pictures of people who put the block on a ¼” bow shackle used in place of the pin at the bottom of the chain plate. It would appear that doing this would put the block behind the dagger board, and make it difficult to sheet if the board was not all the way down. I have also seen others who put the block on the jib track behind the jib block (the N5.8 has a jib track on the inside of the hull next to the tramp, similar to the TheMightyHobie18, H20). How do they sheet the spinnaker on the I20 and Hobie Fox? What has been people’s experience here?
Any help or comments would be appreciated!!
