Returning To Cats - Righting Question
After 24 years away from multis, I bought an 18' the other night at a silent auction.
I need to rig a righting line on the boat and used to have a rig that formed an
M
under the tramp on my old Hobie 16 that worked quite well. I didn't know it at the time, but I believe I had a Hawaiian righting system.
Can anyone point me to a diagram so I can rig a line on the boat I just purchased?

Dave,
Most of us just carry a line that's long enough to go from the mast base post, over the hull, and down enough to use as a righting line. We usually store it in a trampoline pocket near the mast base. You can go the way of a hawiian righting system, but depending on the 18' boat that you have bought (what kind?), you might find that it will drag in the water from time to time - the H16 keeps the trampoline pretty high out of the water.
the single line thing is about as simple and functional as it gets.
The Hawaiian righting line + Chicken line works great on Hobie 16s especially for those starting over.... the Chicken line is a smaller line (with knots if you please) tied to the rudder pins forward along the deck to hold onto. This is so your crew does not get slung around the bow if you stuff a bow: They NEVER forget it.
Hawaiian righting lines on 18s could be attached the same way, with the Chicken line coming from the rudder pins along the deck, down thru the front corners of the trampoline to a pair of blocks.
But often on H18s this is rigged under the tramp: the middle of the big M has a bungee from the front crossbar to the rear crossbar & around a block, to a ring that pulls the righting line aft in its middle. Only used if capsized. Tighten, or add another 6 feet of bungee and another block if it drags.
