Hi

My club is looking at buying a hobie max or sl 16.

Any comments which people think is better.

The hobie looks a bit over priced.

Plus there seems to be very little information about the hobie max on the web, other then the hobie main site.

Is anybody actually sailing the max, or has it failed after lost the ISAF youth cat to the sl 16.

Bye

I guess it depends on what you need it for.

If its a training boat, then there are some good options other than the two listed above.

If you anticipate that some of your Juniors might graduate to National and International cat events, then I presume that the SL16 should be the choice. Also Nacra seem to be taking Youth sailing seriously by building the SL.

Hi

Our needs, it's for a club boat.

We have two Mystère 5.5 fun with kites, which have been classed a bit on the large size for all member. So we plan to replace one.

40 outing pers year for courses with 2 students and 1 teacher.

40-80 outing pers year for private sailing with two people.

kite, plus twin trapizes, no dagger boards.

dealer in Switzerland.

Boats dropped so far
Topper XC and dart 16 X to small.
Hobie 15 to slow.
Hobie 16 not enough hull volume when taking 3 people.

bye

bye

I think that the Topper has more hull volume than the Dart 16. And seeing that the SL16 is developed from the SL15.5, the volume would be about the same - also the Max.
The Spitfire would be the next size up - although Wouter likes the Nacra 500, which would be similar to the others.
There is a very good French dealer for the Topper and White Formula cats.

How about a Nacra 500s?

Great at carrying volume and fast boat too.

No dealer in SUI but parts and support are easy to access.

Indeed I strongly favour the Nacra 500 for these situations.

There is actually a Hobie Max sailing at my neighbouring club and he attends some club races hedl at my club from time to time. I have never seen a SL16 in the flesh.

Personally I think Hobie did the right thing with the Max, I looks like a good boat on a par with the Nacra 500 both in fitting out and performance. It has slightly better styling then the Nacra 500 but that is just cosmetic.

John, how much are they charging you for the SL16 ?

Proust sailing in France offers the club version of the Max for 11.500 Euro's (ex spi) and when comparing that to my late 2006 SL16 data is comparable after adding a spi.

hi

Below are the list prices with about the same level of kit.

sl16 21100chf
hobie max race 24100chf
hobie fxone 24300chf
hobie tiger 24600chf
1chf=0.96 USD= 0.62 euro

One of the worries we have are hobie trying to price out the max from the market.

The 500 looks a nice boat, but has the same dealer here as the sl16.

The club version is quite a bit cut down from the max race or sport.

bye

The momentary day trading exchange according to google is : 0.6338 (18:00 on 5 march 2008)

Source : http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=1+chf+in+euro&meta=

Converting your quotes to :

sl16 13.374 Euro's (=21100chf)
hobie max race 15.275 Euro's (=24100chf)
hobie fxone 15.402 Euro's (=24300chf)
hobie tiger 15.592 Euro's (=24600chf)

These all sound alot more expensive then the quotes I hear for the Nacra 500 here locally, I remember the bare Nacra 500 (no spi) to be 10.500 Euro's. Maybe Macca can give the most current quotes for those boats. Compared to the F16's (= max 14.500 Euro's) the Hobie max sport c.q. Le Race version quotes are just ridiculous.

For the use you propose I would again advice the Nacra 500, it seems the best solution and the most cheap one as well. The difference in fitting out between the 500 and SL16 is negligiable although the 500 is rating faster. I think the decision between 500 and SL16 is a no brainer, get the 500. It will be alot more easy to on later. The 500's are quite in demand overhere.

John,

and what differences it makes to have Nacra and SL as the same dealer... Same thing is Netherlands, France, USA...

Jr

Hobie Tiger is a lot more expensive with Snuffer...

Wouter,

To compare prices, you should compare boats boats with same equipment. Hobie Max and SL16 priced are complet including snuffer and spi. The Nacra 500 that should be compared is the Nacra 500Sport, with MNX Sails, snuffer and spi.
Price in Switzerland for this boats is CHF 21'590.- so about EUR 13'100.-

Now I agree with you the Nacra 500Sport many better fit a non regatta club than any other boat listed. No boom and more volume, larger and a little longer.

Thanks GulSwitzerland,

I keep tabs on the pricing of different boats and my numbers were of last year.

Indeed that is why I wrote

... the [color:

]bare Nacra 500 (no spi) to be 10.500 Euro's ...

Readers should have been able to surmize the price for the upgraded nacra 500 from that.
