I suspect everyone will be interested in the photos. Suggest you post them or if there are a lot stick them on somewhere like flickr. If you're not sure how, email them to me and I can do it. mark dot thomson at ieee dot org.

I just got back from Auckland on Thursday. Was really hoping to be there to see the Worlds, but my work situation forced me back to the US early. Great venue, though February is not the most reliable month for decent wind.

Mark.

Looking at the attendance list, I was intrigued to see that Rex Sellars (NZL) is competing - the '84 Tornado Olympic gold and '88 silver medalist. His son Brett is also sailing.

Cheers, got a ride skippering for a guy from the UK. Met him for the first time a week and a half ago where he crewed for me in the F18 Nationals. Stuggled to click as a team and will need to do a lot of training in NZ but will be happy to make up the numbers. Could have been following it from the wrong side of the Tasman.

Opening cermony tonight, Sunday Practice race with race one on Monday.

Unfortunatly my crew (boat owner) injured his back at the AUS F18 Champs just before heading over to NZ and is having a lot of trouble getting in and out on trap. Is getting plenty of Physio but still not looking good. So far I have been working the main and trapping down wind and trying our best not to come last. If his back does not improve, we may have to pull the pin.

Yesterday and today were blowing upto 40 knots with gusts to 50 from the NE. Tomorrow will ease to 30 gusting 40 before droping later that evening. Then swing Westerly (offshore) for Monday at about 15 knots with seas dropping. So looks like the Practice race on Sunday may not be happening.

However the windsurfers are having a ball

Say hi to Stu for me.

Shame about his back. I know he was really looking forward to this event...

A link to a TVNZ report on the Worlds can be found on the bottom left of the following page -

I don't expect the link will remain there for much longer, but the following may still work after it has gone -

Ouch. I feel his pain. Literally: my back pull from the Tornado Nationals 3 years ago resurfaced for the first time yesterday when I was (GASP!) taking off my socks. (*Blush*)

Send him my well wishes, and some Advil and Soma while you are at it. (They work for me, anyway.) I hope it's nothing serious.

I'm having difficulty getting through to the regatta website, but here is a NZ Herald article on the first day's results -

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/4/story.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10494531

Germans Roland Gaebler and Gunnar Struckman leading from Lovell/Ogletree and Booth/Nieuwenhuis. Bundock/Ashby are 19th.

Viewing every one of those pics, here at a boring day at work, was awesome.

It looks as though most of them had a turning block attached to the front trap line, that the jib sheet runs through, right?

More likely to be the downhaul (cunningham), routed from the cleat at the mast base to a turning block of the crew trap and then back onto the boat with the end kept under control with a bugee (e.g. in the front cross bar). This lets the crew and/or skipper have ready access to the downhaul when going to weather.

Chris.

Well, that would make sense. A good crew would 'trim' the downhaul going to weather on my last two former boats.
Thanks Chris

PS, can I help in any way with the new server for our 'Cat' club, the

Texas City Dike Yacht Club

?

Second That, Eh! <img src=

The Canadian duo of Oskar Johansson and Kevin Stittle impressed today with a third in race 3 and then winning race 4 to move from eighth overall up to fourth place clearly signalling their determination to earn one of the final Olympic berths on offer. They are now the best placed of the ten countries fighting for four places.

FRA Yann Guichard & Alexandre Guyander 17 points (4, 9, 1, 3)
GER Roland Gaebler & Gunnar Struckman 19 points (3, 3, 4, 9)
NED Mitch Booth & Pim Nieuwenhuis 23 points (7, 2, 6, 8)
CAN Oskar Johansson & Kevin Stittle 26 points (21, 1, 3, 1)
ITA Francesco Marcolini & Edoardi Bianchi 33 points (11, 7, 10, 5)
ESP Fernando Echavarri & Anton Paz 34 points (1, 14, 8, 11)
NZL Aaron McIntosh & Mark Kennedy 37 points (17, 8, 5, 7)
AUS Darren Bundock & Glenn Ashby 41 points (14, 23, 2, 2)
FRA Billy Besson & Arnaud Jarlegan 50 points (19, 20, 7, 4)
FRA Xavier REvil & Christophe Espagnon 50 points (18, 12, 14, 6)

Lovell and Ogletree had tack line issues contributing to their
uncharacteristic low placing in races 3 and 4.

I would like to point out that the driver in the above link is still a TEENAGER!
Whilst Tom is set for great things in catamaran sailing, i know that he is gutted that it may not be in the Olympic context.
Marcus is the Junior cat [Dragoon] national coach, so he can expect lots of input on windward mark roundings at his next session.

Good luck Tom and Marcus

Looked like a fantastic rounding until what I think is a gust hit. Look at PUR1 in the background of one of the images..
Full turtle, not good, even if it looks like it was coming back up in the later pictures.

Yeah, it looks like 'Quique and Jorge were having control problems, too. They didn't even beat the Brits in that race.
