A class
As I said, I just pulled a hull off to bring it inside and lift the deck, but as soon as it's all back in one piece and I can get it rigged, I'll post.
Damon: I was actually going to ask about stuff migrating (or not) from the old forum, and one of them is about photos, so might as well do it here/now. Interestingly, it seems that while inline photos were lost in the transition, links to external image hosts persisted. Anything you can tell us about why (or why not) and what to expect in that regard?
And I had another question, about the classifieds: Seems there's old stuff in there in need of purging. Do you have a plan, or are you looknig for discussion and/or help with it, or what?
[edit]
To a couple of your other points about photos: I use my tracking device as little as possible: Camera and road trips about covers it. So while the majority will certainly find uploading from theirs to be delightful, I'll still mail it to my desktop and post it from there. As far as the external image hosts, go, there are lots that still work fine: Though I wouldn't claim it's the best, imagebam is where I put my stuff (for free) and pics there that I linked to from here years ago still work just fine, post-migration. I could never get inline images here to work right.
I don't know much about A-Cats, but this sure is a fun read! Reminds me of my years immersed in the world of old air-cooled VWs. The liveliest discussions on those forums were about dealing with the verdammt hacks made by POs (Previous Owners) who thought they were smarter than the German engineers of the era.Posted by: @jonathan162Just about every stupid little chickenshit thing that could possibly get in the way... did.
Oh - I forgot to add to my list of all the little crap I had to deal with in my Rev.1 rehabilitation of this probably-about-1970 Unicorn: I was lucky enough to score (on ebay) the RWO 2" web hardware to match what was already on the fore crossbeam, and added some hold-downs to the new tramp. So now I'll have proper hiking straps in addition to the wire (which I haven't had a chance to hook up to yet).
Pictures? Ya want pictures?
Yesterday all the snow was gone, the sun was shining, +17C. Hope was in sight... maybe it's going to start drying out? I was thinking "Hey, this is nice - the sun is even up above the trees, so those solar panels should start doing us some good." This morning we woke up to a blizzard, though not a really big one, by our spring standards. Spring snowstorms are usually the ones of super-heavy snow that bring down a lot of trees and power lines. Tomorrow it'll be +7, and by Monday this will all be gone. Until it snows again on Tuesday or Thursday - maybe. We have the most whacked-out climate here...
Anyway, that's the Unicorn with one hull missing, and one of the SuperCat 20s behind.

Ah, the enduring cooling flap debate. Sure glad those cars are in my rear-view at this point.
Never really had anything to do with them myself, though a local mate has done a bunch of Subaru engine upgrades to Westfalias, and most recently a Syncro. I think they were all 2.5 litre EJ25 engines, though looking online I see that a 3.0 (probably EZ30) has been stuffed into a Syncro too. That'd be my choice...
Sorry to get so far off topic, but it doesn't seem any more A-Cat wisdom is coming in, so...
Yep, my wife's Miata is now parked where the old VeeDub used to sit. No more incessant valve adjustments, belt tightening, oil and kitty litter on carport floor, etc. Sort of miss the "fweem" every now and then though.Posted by: @westmattAh, the enduring cooling flap debate. Sure glad those cars are in my rear-view at this point.
With that Gene Berg conversion kit, my buddie put a Subie (Legacy?) engine in his '85 Westy Vanagon. Made that thing run like hell...for a breadbox.Posted by: @jonathan162Never really had anything to do with them myself, though a local mate has done a bunch of Subaru engine upgrades to Westfalias, and most recently a Syncro.
Oh, I'm Captain OT - crazy tangential and will put up with as much as anyone.
"Legacy" isn't actually informative - that includes sedans, wagons, and the Outbacks - so it could have been just about any engine from a 2 litre turbo to a 3.0 litre 6-cylinder. The 2.5 NA is the most common, though. To bring things home a little, the archived Groundhog Day thread that I added to the other day has a pic of our first Sube - a '99 Outback with that EJ25 - bringing home my first SuperCat (the 19) from New York. Still have that one, and since we live out in the country they're about all we drive. Been through close to 10 to date; have 5 at the moment (in various states), plus daughter has one (other daughter recently defected to Toyota, but she'll be back).
Especially if there's any towing involved (meaning: always), I now strongly prefer the 3.0 litres from 2001 onward. Those engines cook.
