I was looking to sell my N5.5 on this site, now having second thoughts...esp if I can configure a set of
wings when hauling around friends or putzing around in light winds. Anyone have suggestions/specs on how to construct? Thanks.

wings are not good for light air sailing
you wouldn't trap out in light air - same effect sitting outboard

But traping out on a wing is fun!!!

If you can weld stainless, which is easier than aluminum I think you could use exhaust tubing (maybe) - and, the reason I bring up exhaust tubing is that you can buy pre-bent/mandrel bent pieces easily and would only need to weld together. There is then the issue as to whether that type of stainless would actually survive the corrosive environment. Aluminum piping is even better, but you'd need to be able to bend and weld, then paint it.

Looks like fun MN3, you got a big ol grin going on there. Yeah would use wings for just sitting around on in light winds, definitely want to get used to trapping out, way out.
Hadn’t thought of exhaust pipe- good idea got a buddy with a welder setup will look into it, and post pics if we able to complete that as a self- quarantine project

That is my friend Zack -

my comment on steel is :

it is 2.5x the weight of alum and from my my quick research is not as easy to bend without the steel failing. not a fabricator so not sure if any of that is an issue.

there are reasons our cats have alum masts, beams, and other parts - weight savings
my custom wings are probably 15 to 20 lbs each
so 40 lbs righting movement 80% of it aft of the CE = performance hit in light air

Yup, but that stainless tube is thin and derives it's strength from the diameter more than the wall thickness. Probably isn't much different in weight-but, only a 50/50 chance of working, since the alloy isn't 316 and likely to corrode. I don't know.

i always try to at least be aware of worst case scenario and hope for the best:

so lets assume 2 people weight a total of 350 lbs are sitting on the wings and get caught in heavy air and med waves. the forces being exerted on the frames that hold the seats out is pretty extreme (i bet they are at least doubled when slamming off a wave) - ya think thin walled exhaust pipe is gonna support 700lbs of bouncing weight?

and what is the cost of failure in this situation? 2 people dumped off a wingset, hanging on to sheets to stay with a boat in heavy weather, with razor sharp steel somewhere ...

ymmv

Easy-pull up the engineering stats for each tubing (aluminum and stainless) and compare. You want to match and that same sheet will tell you the weight per foot. It doesn't add up, don't use it. Simple, no calculations needed. Just compare shear strength and deformation properties, like in an I-beam. If you run a risk of shearing aluminum or steel at the same value, you don't want either if you're worried about injury.

Very valid point, BTW. I guess I shouldn't assume anyone would take the same tact and bother with the numbers.

Don’t underestimate the fun factor of trapping off wings, but don’t ignore the dangers either.
I had a 6 meter Mystere XL, 20’ x 10’, with wings from a Hobie 21 that were modified for the Mystere. They made the boat 14’ wide.
With my paltry 172 lb, fully powered, solo I could just keep the hull in the water in 7mph wind. When that hull comes up, you are suddenly looking at a looonnng fall if things don’t go quite right.
Not only do you fall a good distance, but the opposite board might be partially up, or you hit the opposite wing, the potential for serious injury are real.
My buddy crashed this boat, I broke my ankle, either in the board or wing, not sure.
The company medical department made me take 8 weeks off, from July 1- Sept 4. It wasn’t all bad, they gave me full pay, & I got a plastic cast, so I could go back in the water. Had to give up the stick shift for the summer.

Dammit! Can anyone tell me how to post a photo from an iPad?
I don’t see the “copy image location” in either Firefox or Safari. If I copy the URL, it doesn’t like that either.

I may "throw caution to the wind" and go with aluminum, might have found a spare set on a boat that is getting parted out. I envision solo sailing when trapping out on this boat, in light to moderate winds, or just using the wings to putz around with nonsailing passengers on a cocktail cruise in light airs. I do remember that compared to standing on hull, when you stand on wing and hike out- you are WAY out so points well taken. Appreciate all the advice 😎

If you suspect it might break, keep hooked to the trap, or you might see the boat sail away if it happens. Not sure if seated on the wing the trap whill stay hooked though, the wire will be loose and the bungee will prpobably be ineffective.

I thought I could cure the link...no success.
Yacht World, (the link), does not list any Hobie for sale.
Fixed... he put an extra HTTPS in the link

The only 5.7 with wings I know of is Dave’s, in Manitoba.

Yup - when i saw/sailed my friends F31R - i was in awe

However - needing a F250 to get to the ramp, stepping a 45' mast, and the cost of the 8hp kicker motor is more than i paid for my 5.5 ......

There is a huge sliding scale here. I'll keep my foam monohulls because when it's good and I decide to sail - I can load the boat up, drive to the lake, rig and be on the water in 45 minutes. My new Supercat will be a lot more awesome, but no where near as quick while I'm out of the water.

You don't need the F31. I have an F242 (much cheaper) and although they say you can be on the water in about 45 minutes, we are still around that 60 to 75 minute range with rigging only a couple of time per year.

One boat just doesn't fit every need. I am a firm believer in owning a fleet! 🙂

You don't need the F31.

you do if you want a rotating mast and higher performance (and less chance of snapping a mast by overpowering it I THINK)
beam is also 22' 5" vs 17'11" = a more stable and safer boat

His rig time is the same as yours
you are both using a winch/jin pole to step the mast
he has a wife and daughter, they want the extra room and a head on board (not sure if the 242 has or doesn't
they plan/take week long trips to the keys - pretty sure every inch of the boat is favorable to them

The F242 does have a rotating mast and daggerboard for better performance. The F242 cabin converts to a very nice double bunk. The big difference would be the head. I will still stand by bigger is not always better as a total package. If it a week trip every month, then the F242 may not be the choice.

My bad - i thought it was fixed

F242 cabin converts to a very nice double bunk.

on my friends - parents get the cabin, kid gets the v birth, guests get to sleep anywhere on deck they want 🙂

I will still stand by bigger is not always better as a total package

100% agree - every time i step my 6.0 mast

If it a week trip every month, then the F242 may not be the choice.

we used to camp a lot - part of this purchase for them was to be able to island camp without all the moving and setting up of gear. they pack the boat in the driveway - go to the local ramp and viola! floating hotel

I always thought modifying getaway wings would be the easiest solution to add wings to any cat. Someone has done it with this hobie 20
