Does look like a good deal (from the pictures, be sure and check hulls carefully).

The dolphin striker is a plus and could mean it was rigged as a turbo, does it have a trap wire? Looks like a newer tramp based on the lack of fading in the blue. So the tramp and trailer alone might be worth the asking price.

Approach the owner as a young guy looking for your dream boat where you will give it a good home. It appears the owner valued it based on the fact there was a structure built to cover it with a tarp at one time.

Looks over priced and worn out.. Trailer looks OK.

I agree, for $700you you should not have to be fixing the trailer or sail.

at 700 you should be able to sail away - keep looking. this is the time you will start seeing deals - also as other posters have mentioned, dont discount the p cats from your search

i got a email back and they said it was a gift and they dont know any thing about it.

i am sorry but $700 for a cat and trailer that need a little attention is not out of range.
a good trailer is worth $500 at least (tires are cheap). I am sure h14 sails are available

i'd keep shopping, this one will sit a while. that 700$ will find one that's sailing now in good shape..be the casual buyer, no hurry...one might just end up in your lap for free and besides if this one sits some and gets a lot of noses turned up at it, the price might just get better. i bought my p-16 for 500$ all working trailor/lights, spare rudders, beach wheels, you name it...be casual with this one.

What makes you interested in a hobie 14?

(i've got one and love it, but it's just not for most folks...)

$ sail repair, if worth it is repairing

? if tires are bad, plan on fixing the lights too
? Is that the boom standing angled against one side of the boat?
? Tiller, lines, blocks, (drain plugs), etc... adds up too.
? Who knows if the hulls are solid, the seller probably doesn't
? Wonder why the castings and frame members were caulked
? Old very flexible rudders (like I had until I got some H18 EPOs and redrilled them)

Too many unknowns... (sails and hulls).. and a hassle just to tow it away (tires).
A totally squared away H14, sometimes w/trailer, pops up now and then for 1,000-1,200.

My $.02 is keep shopping.

OK, OK, everyone quit ragging on the poor boat! It has a lot of potential!

I buy boats all the time and I come across $300 boats a lot, but I go for the ones in bad shape. A 14 in good shape ready to sail should run about $1000-1500 depending on the condtion and accessories. We all know that whenever you buy a used older boat, you will be looking for sails and trampolines.

This one looks fairly clean and the trailer looks good. Lights and tires will run about $100. Good mainsails (6 batten ones) are hard to come by and really don't pop up very often. They get pricey at auction, but sometimes there are deals out there. I would expect at least $250 for a good main.

Now, the boat has a few details to note: The mast is solid, so it could be an older boat. It probably wasn't raced because of the mast, but it could be a replacement. It looks like it is in about the same condition as the other hardware. Next, it has a dolphin striker, which looks like the add-on one. This usually means that it was either converted to Turbo or at least it has trap wires. If it was converted to Turbo and it has the Turbo parts (furler, blocks) then it is definitely worth the money. He only mentions one sail, so either it isn't a Turbo or he just doesn't have the jib.

It also has the upgraded steering with the adjustable upper and lower castings! That is HUGE for a 14. It looks to me like the previous owner cared about the boat and performance and therefore upgraded it. If you buy a boat without the adjustable steering, you will be shopping for it and it is a pain in the butt to set up if you just buy the upper castings and tiller arms (like so many people do).

That is a nice, expensive tramp, too.

Another thing to think about is if it has the good 6:1 low profile mainsheet blocks and what condition the running and standing rigging is in.

The best indicator of a good boat is the glue line between the decks and hull. If the boat feels solid, then that is good--but check the VIN. If it is pre 1984, it will be heavier and will probably delaminate soon (if it hasn't already). The best boats are the ones with the red glue. I haven't seen too many yellow post-1984 boats.

i didn't want to start a new thread but i found a nice hobie 16 for 600 with solid hulls and he said its made in 1983.
The boat is an early 80's model, and is well used but not damaged. Some items have been replaced, such as the trampoline, side stays, and mainsail.

The hulls are good, with no soft spots.

I have additional parts available (frame, hulls, mast, battens, etc), and I also have a Hobie 14 for sale ($200). The 14 would need a new trampoline and new rigging (side stays).

Please remember that I have no trailer for either boat (I live on the beach).

the 16 is sweet with all the new stuff...sail it home!!!

the sail would be a little far since there is not a trailer i would have to take it apart and load it in my dads truck (22 ft box truck) so how would the frame come off from the hull, dont you just unscrew some bolts and and with alittle work its off?

you should know someone with a trailor you could borrow...so much easier. mayby even some beach wheels to help the process.

If you have a vehicle with a hitch.. Rent a car trailer. They are wide enough and of course, weight is no object.. $50 here in CA. Brought a Nacra 6.0 and its trailer home once. Worked fine..

their are beach wheels for $25 near me and all they need are new tires. i will see if i can get a trailer.

New tires are pretty expensive keep that in mind.

If they are Cat Trax make sure they have the metal rims so you can buy tires (about $120 plus shipping for two) because the first generation Cat Trax used a one piece tire/rim that you can't get anymore. If you convert the old style you are basically buying the pipe and still need bearings/rims/tires etc.

If they are the old style with without a rim to mount to tires to then it will cost you about $250. $99 for each tire with rim and $50 to ship. Plus any extras you may want like new endcaps nylon washers, delrin bearings new SS cotter pins(recomended) .

Still worth it in my opinion

is it okay for the boat if i take a mono hull boat's trailer and put the hobie upside down so the frame is on the trailer and then strap it down and put the mast on the roof of the car?

It would probably fit in the the box truck on its side.

the box truck is filled nothing will fit.

A much easier fix for flat Cat Trax tires is to buy a pair of inner tubes to go inside the tubeless tires. You can purchase them from the CatSailor site. I had a local lawnmorwer repair shop insert the tubes for me. They hold air and work great.
