Any Lake Mead Sailors Here?
Getting tired of going out there and being the only Hobie on the water. Anyone else live in or near Vegas that frequent Lake Mead? Heat is pretty much gone and we have a short time left to comfortably sail. Our local fleet, 51, seems to have not added info to their website for a while now.
Sail Safe. HD.
Suggestion:
Take others sailing with you. Such as neighbors. If you see some one on a sailboard, an AMF Sunfish, or other slow monoslug, follow them and talk. -Invite them along for 'just a quick ride'. They will be thrilled to feel how fast a real sailboat can go.
In August, I followed a Venture Cat that was beaching. I invited the guy for a couple of laps across the bay. Two weeks later, he was the owner of a 'new'-used Hobie 16. He paid a bit too much for it, because of his excitement to get one, but he seem satisified with the improvement over his Venture Cat.
Three years ago, I assisted the new owners of a Hobie 16 to get their sails repaired at a reasonable sail loft and get some needed parts.-That helped them get on the water quicker than they would have, if I had not helped.
I intentionally sail close to lake places that have lonely looking Hobies, and sometimes tempt the owners to re-aquaint themselves, with their boat for the day.
Just this September, me and another Hobie started sailing together, and don't ya know, another Hobie hoisted sails and joined the excitement.
Be aware, when you are sailing alone, people do see you out there and derive pleasure, hope, and wistful thinking while watching you. They are approachable and thrilled if you visit with them.
This regatta is actually "piggybacked" on a Monohull regatta hosted by
the Nevada Yacht Club.
Fleet 51 hosts the catamaran portion of this regatta, the only SINGLE
HANDED Hobie 16 / Hobie 18 regatta I know of in this area. Great
winds, great sailors, and a great time!
