Anyone tried "Hobie recommended" softspot repair?
When my first H-16 hull delaminated, I repaired it with the epoxy injection method that was outlined in "On the Wire". That method has you drilling holes throughout the whole soft spot, and injecting in all the holes.
Matt Miller, of Hobie, sent me a copy of the recommended repair method. That method had you drilling one injection hole in the middle of the soft spot, then only drilling exit holes at the edges of the soft spot. This method seems attractive, as you drill less holes and would have less epoxy mess. But, do you get as complete a repair or do you get voids that fail to get filled with epoxy?
Anyone out there tried the Hobie style repair?
All the "On The Wire" archives are now part of www.TheBeachcats.com , there is a link at the bottom of the main menu. The illustrated delamination repair article is here.
Catamaran Sailboats Delamination Repair Instructions
Thanks for posting where "On the Wire" went. There are lots of good articles that were in there. I copied them and put them in my boat file.
Back to the delamination story...
My second hull delaminated on my last sail this fall, so I got to repair it this spring. I got left over epoxy from my first repair two years ago. I think it should still be good. The manufacturer recommends using it up, within a year,...but they want to sell you new epoxy...so I'll take my chances. Has ANYONE done the Hobie recommended repair??? (Don't all speak up at once!)
Hi!
Thanks for the "on the wire" link!
I am not doing the delam repair, but I am building an iceboat/landyaght (www.iceflyer.com) (free plans)
The author suggests coating it with epoxy / glass so I dug out some epoxy (West System Gougeon Brothers) that I've had since my Tornado project. Specifically my uncompleted Tornado project... of about probably ten years ago.
Well much to my surprise it still worked. Epoxy is so nice to work with compared to polyester.
