I bought a new Hobie 16 2 years ago and it creaks like an old pirate ship. On the up side, in a good wind it sings.

Another friend of mine bought a Hobie 16 2 years ago and his creaked as well. His solution was to tighten down the tramp until the frame started to bow. On the downside, his doesn't sing.

Any ideas for a simple solution to get rid of the creaking?

I would really appreciate it. My email is fisherstev@aol.com

Thanks

The side rails of your tramp frame are supposed to bow in about 3/4" when your tramp is tight. This helps to eliminate some of the twisting action on the framework (creaking). By singing, do you mean rudder hum? Most rudders will hum at certain speeds. This can be eliminated by shaving the trailing edge down to a fine point. Some people like to leave it as is, as it's a indicator that you are cruising nicely.

The creaking is the crossbeams and/or hull pylons moving inside the corner castings. They will eventually "seat" themselves and the creaking will stop. Creaking can also be eliminated by taking the frame all apart and reassembling using epoxy. This makes the frame very stiff but makes it very difficult to get apart again.

A tight trampoline (bowed side rails) is essential to stiffen up the frame.
