Hi Folks Im new to Hobie sailing I just bought my first boat a older 14 non turbo in great shape. but the old owner could not find the main sail battens. So I have purchased tappered 1" catamaran battens that need to be cut to length. My question is how much should the batten stick out of the batten pocket once it has reached the luff (under no tention) It may not be to crucial but I dont want to cut them wrong they were not cheap. Any help would be great [color]

An inch or so is usually enough, although you may want a little more to ensure the battens will work in another sail.

Does your sail have 5 or 6 battens?

The accepted rule of thumb is 2" from the leech when the batten is not under tension.
