Hobie 16 Comptip length differences??
I have a new comptip section and a used one that I managed to get out of a bent mast. The new one is about 6-8 inches longer and has a longer section where it slides into the mast. Does anyone know why they are different--or when Hobie changed the design??
Dan, Matt Bounds explained on "the other forum" the factory comp tip is the shorter version and retro fit the longer. My factory one (H16) is 5 3/8" shorter than the retro, dont know if this difference is the same for the H14.

Dan: If I remember correctly, All of the early retrofits, Back when you took your solid mast to the dealer to be cut off and comptipped were the style that had the bolt hole. They seemed to come loose and rock back. You can look up the mast and see it tilt back at the comptip. At some point they lengthed the part that inserts into the aluminum and that seemed to solve the problem. I think I had my 84 boat done in about 88 and it had the new longer style. These are my recollections and could be wrong.
Thanks for the responses.
Matt Miller explained (on the Hobie Forum) that the new ones were longer. The used one I have does have the bolt through it--I'm glad someone said something about that or I would have bolted the new one!
The things you learn..
My '82 had a bolted tip and rocked back. It was a real pain as the sail would always get pinched at that point and it either hung up or came out of the track.
