new step casting threading problem with post
We have a 1973 H16 and are replacing the step casting. The mast step kit did not fit the old step casting. We drilled out the pop rivets and tried to thread on a new step casting. However the threading on the dolphin striker post appears to differ from that of the new casting. Is there an alternatative step casting for the H16?
There are three versions of the step casting, but they all have the same threads for the dolphin striker post.
Make sure the threads on the post are clean (wire brush) since there's undoubtably corrosion on a 36 year old post. Use a lubricant (WD40) when you thread the casting onto the post and back it off 1/4 turn for every 1/2 turn (like you're using a tap / die).
What is the thread size on the dolphin striker? I will be changing my step casting soon as well, and I know that the top of the threaded dolphin striker has mushroomed out inside the casting a bit. I want to clean the threads with a die or nut before putting the new casting on.
Thanks!
9/16" x 18 NF
A tap that size will cost you about $30 US
The matching die goes for about $20 US
search for tap / die
I believe it's 39150, but honestly, I would have to double check the last 3 numbers. I was out today in about 8 to 10 knots of east wind. I had a couple of good runs, but my mast and step castings are so worn that the stops don't even touch. When you reef on the main the mast turn almost 90 degrees. Still tons of fun!
