Any good ideas for sailing solo? All my friends are wimps and a afraid of a little cold water, so I have no crew. What are some things that I can do so I can step/un-step the mast by myself and right the boat when eventually I take a digger by myself. I weigh a whopping 155 lbs so doing it with just a righting line is probably out of the question. Do those cloth buckets work? Would it hold a suffecient amount of water to make of for my own lack of weight? Right now the water is maybe 33 F. So I gotta be quick. I hear hypothermia sets in a hurry in those conditions even with a wetsuit.

If you go sailing on days when the "air" temperature is warm, you shouldn't have to worry about hypothermia. Just stand on the lower hull and causually hang from the righting rope, and enjoy the slow boat to China. If your lake is small, you will float to shore, and you can then walk your mast back up. -But if you float into a cattail bed, that's real bad news. (Gotta use best judgement to your particular lake.)

Paul Douglas is predicting some 70 F. days!

I belong in the wimp category - 33*F sounds more than ice fishing than sailing to me... I think you should consider moving.
Righting solo... at 15m/h wind speeds and the right technique a righting line and a seald mast - no problem.
At milder windspeeds the water buckets work or you could use a solo right (do a search on that device ... I posted pic's on the one I fabricated myself).

The lakes are warming up quite well now. Probably in the low 40's by now with the sun/rain we've been having. I'm green with the hobie, so I'm like a little kid at christmas. As soon as there was open water I was tempted to go run the mississipi when there was still a fair amount of ice on it. That probably could've ended tragically.

Since we`re on the subject, when sailing solo what does one do with the jib. Eliminate it? Fly it normally? Or, set it up a specific way?

I have 3 of the Rick White videos (very good by-the-way) but I didn`t see this issue addressed.

sailing without a jib is a bad idea. When I sail solo I try to adjust as little as possible. It helps to place the lines for jib and traveler in a position that you can reach from the wire before you get on the wire.

Thanks for the info. Would you always be "on the wire" when sailing solo? I assume one can sail the H16 solo in light to moderate winds with hiking straps only and the sails set out to spill some wind. Or, is this a flawed assumption; one that will end up getting my 190lbs towed back to shore with my tail between my legs?

I have sailed before, but not on a performance cat like the H16. So, I have a lot to learn. I`ve always found it helpful to gather as much info as I can BEFORE I hit the water (figuratively and literally)!

Hiking out rather than getting on the wire works... after a while you get better and you will seek the challenge. At that point rather than traveling out you will try to compensate by getting more weight on the wire. When I started I did not even wear a harness. For the first few weeks you will be bussy learning to deal with some of the odd stuff on a hobie (assuming that you moved up from some type of mono hull). Don't worry too much - you will get there.
