[#17048]

Hello,

I have a stock Hobie H16 spinnaker without any of the retriever patches needed to be compatible with a mid-pole snuffer setup. Can anyone provide specific details as to what I should use as a quality "patch" (where do I buy these and how are they secured?) and more importantly, where exactly on the H16 spinnaker will I need to put them?

Thanks

Dave

There is a "stock" Hobie 16 spinnaker available? From Hobie Cat Company in the United States?

Maybe you got it from Hobie Cat Europe, which makes them for the youth boat?

Hi Mary,

I am reasonably certain the spinnaker I have is, in fact, a stock H16 spinnaker from HobieCat USA. The 2005 Hobie catalog lists the part# for the sail as 20999002 and the link to it is here:

http://www.hobiecat.com/support/pdfs/22_25.pdf

The link shows the available spinnakers and the option to purchase one with, and rigged for, a mid-pole snuffer.

My problem is that I have to add/make the snuffer and add the patches to my spinnaker to allow this. It looks very straight-forward but I`d still like some advice on the patches.

As an aside, my initial choice was a (furling) Hooter setup that I first saw in one of Rick`s videos. But, when I stumbled across an unused H16 spinnaker, pole and hardware (with sail colors that match my boat) for about $500.00...Well, I didn`t have the will-power to pass it up.

Dave

I have just measured one of my son's sails that was dripping water onto the hall carpet as he dries it over the upstairs bannisters!
There are 3 patches mounted on the center-line of the sail;
From the middle of the foot to the bottom patch is 1050mm
from the bottom patch to the center one is 2350mm
middle to top patch is 2350mm
that leaves 1720mm top patch to head of sail.

there are various patches;
A grommet through the sail
A webbing loop stitched to the sail
A plastic or s/steel ring stitched to the sail

Either way, it will need a reinforcing patch the size of a stretched out hand a couple of layers thick

Have fun with the third sail, i was sure that the spinny would not work on the 16 but I was totally wrong. the guys sail them hot downwind just like an f18, in strong winds too.

Thanks a lot for the info - a big help to me! If you get a chance, would you ask your son if he is satisfied with the positions and sizes of those patches. I have read several posts where people have placed patches in various locations only to find they bunch up going into the mouth of the snuffer. So, I`d be interested to hear if those measurements caused any such troubles.

Aside from that, I very much appreciate you taking the time to record those measurements.

Dave

Mary,

You`ve got me curious regarding "very strange". What`s up?

Hobie europe mucked around with the spinny for a while before standardizing it as the Youth set-up and have got it spot on.

if you have probs with the spin getting bunched up, tie a knot in the snuffer line 6 or so inches proximal to the end tie-off. This makes it so it doesn't all bunch up as much. I figured that out recently and seems to work really well.

Mary was surprised to find that we sell a spinnaker for the Hobie 16, but we don't promote it as a class. I explained to her that we have offered spinnakers for most models for many, many years. Spinnakers are really fun... but we still do not support a seperate class for Hobie 16's with spinnaker.
