Here is a video we've made on how to set up a Hobie 16 for racing.
Check it out and let us know what you think!

Cheers James.

The major hitch with a Hobie 16 as a youth boat is not the operation. The biggest trouble is its safety. Owing to its heavy and frequent leaky comp tip mast, the boat is a lot harder to right than other cats that are capable of filling this niche.

Frequently leaky? They are not hard to properly seal and are as easy to right as any cat of similar construction... or is the post simply more spam or your ad links?

I owned two 16's with the CompTip. Neither leaked in over twenty years of sailing.

James,

You went really fast past the discussion about the dolphin striker tension. How tight do you guys set it, and how do you measure that?

Downhaul past the black band is a secret? Nice...

BTW, I've owned 5 Hobie 16s, 4 had CompTips. The only mast leaks I ever had came from the fittings (cleats), and only on a really old boat.

Mike
