Under the boom is a fitting that points toward the mast base. It has a hole in it. I have been eyeing it for hours and cannot figure out what it is for. Please enlighten me.

This might be it....
For a while, Hobie but a tang on the booms to connect a vang to. This is just a block setup that holds the boom down when it is traveled out. It never panned out and I don't think anyone uses one these days.
Good luck,
Jack

Yep. That's what it is.
Just ignore it and try not to scrape your back on it when you slide under the boom!
Fair winds,
Nick

That is a very important part of the boat! That is where you hang your fuzzy dice! (If you are competing in Official events, be sure you are class legal and use ONLY Hobie dice.)
