A long drop!

Oracle Racing's James Spithill joins the Mile High Club
Interesting that it righted itself. I wonder if that was deliberate or just happened.
That is interesting, they did not even get the front beam wet!Just how much bouyancy do these boats have? From the photos it looks like the bloke in white [Spithill?] douses the assymetric then steers the boat upright while an unseen boat [large rib?] pulls from a line attached to the jib tack. seeing the AC 45 on its side [front and side on views] gives a different perspective to the hull shape,
Cheers,
Roy.

Another nice AC45 video on sail-world.com:
Coutts capsizes in San Francisco
That's supposedly Coutts dropping through the wing - probably hurts a bit more than going through a sail!

The amount of bouyancy in the hollow mast gives a whole new meaning to sailing on the edge !! <img src="<>/cool.gif" alt="cool" title="cool" height="15" width="15" /> If the crew can invert the sail shape to act like a aircraft wing then the yacht will always right itself. <img src="<>/laugh.gif" alt="laugh" title="laugh" height="15" width="15" /> It's just a matter of getting the platform to be facing into the wind. <img src="<>/crazy.gif" alt="crazy" title="crazy" height="15" width="15" />
Better still if a crew member is tied to the control line and falls off first and inverts the sailshape then the mast may not even touch the water. <img src="<>/wink.gif" alt="wink" title="wink" height="15" width="15" />
