rudder rake
adjusted my rudders to rake under boat as far as possible.after sliding the cam plate bolt as as far as it will go up into the cam and retightening,I still have a little play between the rudder and the casting(about an 8th of an inch)is this normal or if not is it correctable?
If you've got the adjustable upper castings (with the cam plate and bolt), then you should have the newer lower castings as well.
Look down at the bottom of the lower casting, just below the gudgeon, right where the rudder pin emerges from the casting. There should be a plastic allen screw (3/16", I believe) that you can screw in to "take up the slack" in your system.
After I got the rake I wanted on my H16 rudders, I used a trick that was on the old catsail.com site that worked great. I think it might now be on http://www.thebeachcats.com site. I wrapped the leading edge of the rudder with plastic wrap and then filled the lower part of the lower casting with silicone caulk. I then lowered the rudder into place and left it harden a day or two. This makes for a perfectly solid, but flexable socket for the rudder to rest. And being made from silicone, you can always scrape it out if you need to change things in the future.
