I have a Hobie 16 and thought about sailing from hobie beach north under Powell bridge to end up at the gulf stream. Seems like a good way to see something different. Something like the round Virgina Key and Key Biscayne race. I was looking at some charts. I was wondering what the sailing veterans do, what is the best/quickest, without major issues, route to Fisher Island/Norris cut. Once under the bridge is it best to go north up the intercoastal, then east up the ship channel to Fisher Island? Or can you without much problems cut across the flats to the Lummus Turning Basin and then up the channel east to Fisher Island? Any recommendations?

You can go directly from the Powell Bridge toward Fisher Island. It gets very shallow though. Your rudders will probably kick up especially if it is low tide or near low tide. During our around the key races I usually cut between the small spoil island and Virginia Key.

John thanks for the reply and the advice. I'll have to try the path some time. My first go will definitely be at high tide. The chart shows a wreck between the spoil island and Virgina Key, that's a great visual reference... and a reminder! Sure beats having to tack between ships and barges in the ship channel.
