I want to put footstraps on by Blade. Has anyone used 2 on each side of the boat, one at the very back and one behind the rear crossbar? Are they loose enough for shoes, a particular brand and style? Any photos would be nice.

Thanks,

I use the DaKine windsurfing footstraps available at most cat or windsufring shops or maybe here in the online store. I only use one, at the back, but I race alone most of the time. They are adjustable and you can fit a foot in there while wearing booties.

It would have been nice to have another one for crew on the really windy days though, but going upwind the crew is further forward so I don't know how you would get to the inside of the hull to back the screws.

One should be good. Put the aft end of the strap on the transom (where it turns vertical) - all the way back. P

What's involved in actually fitting these things?

I just measured my foot in bootie, marked the hull with a pencil and drilled the two 1/4 in. holes for the stainless steel screws. I put large (1") fender washers on the inside of the hull for support of the lock nut on the back side and a smaller washer on the outside to support the strap. My straps are velcro adjustable. I also put some silicon goop in and around the holes under the straps to prevent leaks.

These footstraps is what most Tigers get fitted with in Europe: Magic Marine Light footstrap

Advantage is that it allows you to just put your toes in instead of your whole foot.

To mount footstraps on the hull of my I20, I cut 1

square pieces out of a 3

diameter piece of PVC pipe and used that as backing for the bolt instead of flat washers (last time I checked, the inside of my hull was not flat). I superglued a piece of bicycle innertube to the piece of PVC and applied silicone to that. The footstap connections are strong enough to lift the stern of the boat with (I would not try that with just washers, and it does not leak a drop.

it is fairly easy to bend fender washers to the contour of the inside of the hull, though I suspect pvc might work a little better... but pvc tends to crack fairly easily.
