Hi,

Im going to build a F16 and was wondering what you guys thought about using a hobie 18 mast. Its the right length but is it too stiff/ heavy?
It would be a great option if it would work as it can be picked up really cheap.

Heavy and not a wing mast. I'd think you would have trouble getting a proper sail shape without having sails made to that mast as well. I don't know about length, if it's too long that's easily remedied.
I'm assuming by your name it'd be a euro mast, so there wouldn't be the comp-tip.
Just my opinion, but I think you'd be creating more work than you would save.

If you are scrounging and building to save money, go for the TheMightyHobie18 mast and upgrade to a carbon mast later on as an option.
If you want to purchase used sails later on, you should aim for a APHC wingmast.
If you are going to build your own sails as well and are extremely into saving money, go for the TheMightyHobie18 mast or any rotating beachcat mast you can scrounge. Should still be some alu Tornado masts lying around after the switch to carbon masts in the T-class (I have two in my garden and one at the club).

Depends on your wants and needs <img src="<>/smile.gif" alt="smile" title="smile" height="15" width="15" />

yes I think il probably buy an old TheMightyHobie18 for a low price and re-use as much as possible and then upgrade later. What do you guys think about using the curved cross beams from the TheMightyHobie18?

I think you'd save yourself alot of work and frustration if you just bought a late model F16.

The curved crossbeams will not measure in if I remember correctly.

Rolf, what do you mean when you say

will not measure in

? I think the TheMightyHobie18 is 2,4m wide which is under the 2,5 max or? I looked at the rules and found nothing about curvature but i might have missed something.

If I remember correctly, the rules require straight beams. Even if they didn't, I would still not recommend Hobie 18 beams. Where are you located?

Kofi,

from what I remember there was a constraint in the rules on how much curvature the beams could have. You are indeed correct that the class rules available on the ISAF website there is no constraint on this. Must have been changed as the F-16 class went through the ISAFication process.

woa dont put an TheMightyHobie18 stick on f16 , sacralidge !!!!!!!

I got just what you need , an alluminium piet saarburg taper top A class mast , I asked Piet if it would take a spin and he reckoned ok . It would need cut down a wee bit , but its a proper wing section ,

Its off an A Class I built that got trashed so hardly been used

got A class beams too for ultra narrow f16 <img src="<>/wink.gif" alt="wink" title="wink" height="15" width="15" /> straight , with radiused main sheet track , other kit too , rudders , tiller bar , hot stick (off hurricane 5.9) , tornado main cut to H5.9 size , could be cut again to f16 ???

even got a couple of tomcat hulls you could cut skegs off and turn into f16 , or leave on for a schrs bandit , you can have them free with mast .

Tomcat was john pierces version of a training cat , he put skegs on stealth hulls .

I would take that offer with both hands if I was to build! Much easier to modify and assemble than starting with a tree in the forrest and going from there to a stradivarius F16.

aint it strange how someone starts a thread like this , someone offers exactly what they NEED , mast that is , and its a keeper not a stop gap , low price and available in same country whilst being rarer than hens teeth ,

an all goes quiete. <img src="<>/smile.gif" alt="smile" title="smile" height="15" width="15" />
