Steeple Chase 2005; The final distance race in the Harken Distance Series !

The current top 5 standings (out of 34) are :

29 points = Matt and Gina McDonald Blade F16
26 points = John Casey Inter-20
22 points = Craig Van Eaton ARC20
18 points = Brian Karr Inter-20
16 points = Rob Rabideau Nacra 5.5 uni (?)

The final deciding race is this weekend 10/11 dec 2005. Two full days of distance racing.

Over at the www.1design.net webpage the showdown is worded as follows :

Harken Distance Series Showdown: The Steeplechase

The Blade. The Inter20. The ARC. One race remaining, with the Harken Distance Series Championship on the line. Inaugurial year champ Dave Ingram will be passing on the trophy, and Matt McDonald on the Blade, John Casey on the Inter20, or Craig VanEaton on the ARC have the best chance of taking it home.

But theres more on the line than just a trophy, a win by the Blade will demonstrate the capabilities of the F16 catamaran on a larger scale, not to mention a year of Wouter hyping the win:) A win by the I20 will keep the design on top as THE distance racing boat. And the ARC, whose sailors would be more than happy to see their boat in the overall win column.

The race takes place next Saturday and Sunday in and around Key Largo Florida. Information on the race can be found on www.catsailor.com!

****************************************************************************************

Matt and Gina are still leading the chart but not by much and typically the Steeple Chase is an event that favours the Supercat/ARC and I-20 crews on their big boats.

But if the McDonalds pull it off then WOW ! What an achievement ! And the boys of 1design are right, that will be something to flash in front of everybodies eyes for a whole year. Because we are talking about the US Blade F16 prototype here, in its inaugural year with a crew that didn't sail on a spinnaker boat together before stepping on this boat. Not to forget that it is a mixed male-female crew !

But it will be a great achievement no matter what happens this weekend. It is also a great example of how to stay in the race by simply finishing even when the going gets though as with Hirams Haul distance race in the series. This will be mostly an achievement of the piloting crew where the design acted as a sufficient good foothold.

I will be routing for the McDonalds, that will be clear. But more importantly, I wish all the participating crews in the Steeple Chase the best weather and lots of enjoyment.

So tell me Wouter, how did you attach a photo and include it in the same post?

Since you don't get to add an attachment until after you've written the post, you don't know where the attachment will be when you write the post - I can't see how you did it. [Linked Image]

That is a nice photo by the way. I've always assumed the red & green trap handles meant port & starboard, but now I see there are other interpretations.

We have a "David and Goliath" on our hands , take a look at the

Pre-registed listing - Steeple-chase :

1 A-cat - clive mayo
2 ARC 21 - Craig Van Eaton
3 ARC 22 - Eric Roberts
[color] 4 Blade F16 - Matt McDonald
5 M20 - Michael Phillips
6 NI-20 - Blake MacDiarmid
7 NI-20 - Chris Runge
8 NI-20 - Chris Titcomb
9 NI-20 - David Ingram
10 NI-20 - Jared Sonnenklar
11 NI-20 - John Casey
12 NI-20 - Mike Hill
13 NI-20 - Murray Herendeen

The only boat under 20+ foot are an A-cat and the F16.

That F16 must look mighty small next to that ARC22 ! And I can't imagine the length of the shadow of that M20 rig.

In true fashion, Tail-ending the fleet is indeed considered normal. Any boat overtaken is a major victory no matter how you slice it. Only one way to go guys. You can't do worse than normal. This can be fun actually. This will be "trying to catch the boat in front" all the way.

I don't think Clive will be sailing an A-Class cat. Singlehanding is not allowed in the Steeplechase.

Clive has indeed listed himself on an A-cat. Do you think he got the wrong entry form and wanted to list himself for the Tradewinds instead of Steeplechase ?

Go to this link and read all about it :

Latest reports from Mary on the progress made in the Steeplechase 2005

I will now give a summary of these newsflashes.

Mary's report 1 :

Quote
Unusually small turnout for the Steeplechase -- only 21 boats. But I think all are veterans of the race except for Matt McDonald on the Blade F16 -- it is his first time around.

The race started in light air, about 7 mph, out of the north-northeast, so it was right on the nose and a beat all the way up Barnes and Card Sounds to Angelfish Creek. For part of that time the wind died to almost nothing.

After getting through the creek, they popped their spinnakers and headed a little offshore. The wind has now shifted around more to the east, so they are running pretty much down the shoreline on the Atlantic side of Key Largo, with wind up to 5-6 mph.

Mary's Report 2 :

Quote
Gina is not sailing with Matt. Crew is Dan Jarrett. At least they have two paddles with them.

Mary's report 3 :

Quote
Chris Titcomb (Nacra 20) just called Rick at the beach and said his GPS is telling him the finish is still 2.5 hours away. They are making about 3 knots headway. Grim.

Mary's report 4 :

Quote
Eric Arbogast (crewing on ARC 21 with Craig Van Eaton) just called me and said they are passing Rodriguez Key at Silver Shores. Says Matt McDonald's F16 is ahead of him, as is Team Morada (Nacra 6.0), and a Nacra 20.

Starting to look like some midnight arrivals.

Eric took heart and hope from the fact that nobody had finished yet.

Mary's report 5 :

Quote
First boat just finished, a little before 7:30 p.m. It is Eric and Bill Roberts on an ARC 22.

Mary's report 6 :

Quote
The ones who pulled out are Alex LeFur, Wick Smith, Craig Van Eaton and Garrett Norton.

They could trailer down to Anne's Beach and race the second half if they wanted to, but nobody ever does that. I suppose you could win even if you didn't get scored for the first day if you sail the second day and all the other boats sink and you have a faster time than anybody had the first day (the latter wouldn't be difficult this year).

This probably means that third place holder in the current Harken endureance race series Graig van Eaton is out of the race of becoming the 2005 Distance race champion. He will most likely remain at 22 points in the series and will probably loose 3rd place to Brian Karr.

It also means that oly 21-4 = 17 points can seperate the Steeple chase winner from the crew on the bottom of the score list.

This means that only the following bold cased skippers have a shot at the distance race championship if Matt and Dan are last in the standings = worst case scenario. The other crews are not participating in the Steeplechase, have abandonned the race or at down by more then 17 race points. The 1st day winners Eric and Bill Roberts haven't completed any of the other distance races in the series so they don't play a role in this championship.

-1- Matt McDonald 29
-2- John Casey 26
-3- Craig Van Eaton 22
-4- Brian Karr 18
-5- Rob Rabideau 16
-6- Frank Rodericks 15
-7- Brett Moss 14
-8- John Kuna 14
-9- Terry Greene 13
-10- John McKnight 13
-11- Jay Roth 13
-12- Jared Sonnenklar 12

So the ARC 21 is out of the race and it looks like a direct show-down between 2 I-20's and 1 Blade F16 with another I-20 much farther down with pretty much only a theoretical chance of becoming the distance race champion.

I didn't expect it, but this is nailbiting !

Eric and Bill Roberts (ARC22) just finished at 3 minutes after 1:00. There is a very nice breeze here. Bunch of other boats crossing Blackwater Sound.

Mary's report 8 :

Quote
The Sunday leg of the race started at 9:00 a.m. and all but one of the boats finished between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.
Only 13 of the original 21 boats completed the entire course.
In addition to the four that succumbed to boredom and dropped out Saturday due to lack of wind, another four who DID finish Saturday night did not start Sunday's leg. Non-starters were John McLaughlin, Nacra 20; Matt McDonald, Blade F16; Marc Newlyn, Nacra 6.0; and Clive Mayo, A-Class.

Don't even ask me why Clive was in there with a singlehander. For years it has been an unwritten rule about this race that singlehanders are not allowed, for safety reasons. I thought it WAS in writing, but apparently not. Needless to say, the rule WILL be in writing for next year's race.

Check our home page tomorrow for Rick's story, results, and photos.

So Matt and Dan didn't compete the second day of the Steeple chase distance regatta. This means that John Casy, who is not named as having retired from the race is most likely the new 2005 Harken Distance race series champion, sailing an I-20. It maybe the case that Brian Karr has moved up to second place, with Matt/Dan finishing up at third spot.

More news later

Brian didn't sail this race so Brian will not be moving up. Matt was ahead of Brian before the race started.

So it looks like JC and Matt are one and two for the series. Hopefully the series will be better attended next year.

From www.1design.net

OK,

Let me be the first to congratulate JC/Kenny on winning the Edurance series. As usual they were the team.

I can not give you any perspective but from our boat as we did not get to converse with anyone else. That is what really sucked as we missed the parties, and the only real reason I go sailing events anyway.

Dan's flight was delayed due to weather in Chicago, so we did not get down to the keys and get the boat set up until about 1:30 in the morning. Get up at 6, finish rigging and head out to the start. A little BS with a few people tacking up through Jewfish creek was about the extent of our socializing. We manged to nail the start and it went down from there. Cat sailor said something about the wind being 5-7, but that must have been measured from the top of Bill Roberts 38' mast. We were moving a little about half way up card sound, but it was slowly dying as we went. By the time we made Angel Fish creek, the tide had changed and there was 0 wind in the creek down at our level anyway. We spent over an hour paddling against the current and walking the boat along the mangroves to get through the creek. We then started a long very slow down wind. As the sun went down we still had about 30 miles to go according to the GPS. A while after the sun went down we ended up totaly becalmed. All the sails were hanging straight down. We thought about paddling into shore at one point, about the time we noticed that, the crab pot bouys were going under our boat side ways. I turned on the GPS and we were making 2.5 mph in the current at about 100 degrees from the direction we needed to go. At this point Dan fell asleep, and I just let the boat go and watched the shooting stars till a slight breeze finally picked up. Not really knowing the area other than there is a lot of rock and coral along the shore with few places to pull out and it was very dark and we had no ground crew to speak of, we figured the safest option for us would to go all the way to the finish. We managed to make it in to Annes Beach a little after midnight.

I really would like to thank the guys on the 6.0 that finished right behind us. Gina did not come down, and all the people we had talked to about sharing ground crew with had either left long before we came in, or dropped out of the race. These guys saved our lives, with not only a ride back to Gillberts, but fed us one of their sub sandwitches they had in the car. Undoubtedly one of the best meals I have ever had in my life. If not for their generosity, we would have been totaly screwed.

Buy the time we got back to Gillberts and showered it was after 1:30. The weather channel was predicting light air for the morning, we had no ride back to Annes scheduled, we were beat from sitting in awkward positions, paddling and willing the boat to move for 16 hours. As such we elected to sleep in, have a large breakfast with tons of coffee and pack up the boat in leisure.

After the Mug and now this I have to seriously rethink my dedication to this distance stuff. Although that is what makes sailing so great, because when the conditions are good, the experiece is unbelievable.

Looking forward to the next one and not missing the party.

Matt
