Mast head hook scratches the mast

How do prevent from scratching you mast while raising/lowering the sail? The hook at the head of the sail brushes against the mast. I’ve tried taping it, but it just gets ripped off from locking it in the mast tip hole. This is pretty disturbing because it’s leaving scratches up and down nearly the entire mast.

Thanks,

Mike Rohrer

Mike:

The hook at the top of the sail will scrape down the side of the mast. I have put my sail up hundreds of times and there is no sign of wear on the mast of my Tiger.

Maybe you have a sharp thingy on the hook. Check to see if there is something you could file off and sand smooth so there is nothing that could scratch the mast.

Sorry if you already tried this I cannot figure out why you are messing up your mast.

Later,
Dan

my A class did same thought of running a length of pvc tape where scratches were and replace when starting to wear through , it was in days of Ally masts so I wasn't unduly bothered and never got round to it , with a carbon mast would be more important , judicial filing i expect would help .

I think I also used to rotate mast slightly when pulling sail up to face hook away from mast , worked with A because of relative short foot (chord ?) length and sail would still pull up .
