Will the furling mechanism hold?

I am owner of a Prindle 18-2 Catamaran and have recently acquired a furling mechanism manufactured by BARTON MARINE EQUIPMENT. More specifically, I got the “Jib Furling Gear Drum with 95mm Diameter-BT 42335”(for up to 9.5 square meter sails) and the corresponding “Jib Head Swivel-BT 42336”. I was just wondering if anybody in here could confirm to me that this specific part is adequate and safe to install on my boat. After all, should the forestay tear loose because of the drum (or the swivel for that matter) not resisting the pressure, I would loose the mast and have a serious problem.

The German distributor who sold me the parts already assured me that the part is perfect for my boat. I would have appreciated an opinion by the manufacturer (keeping in mind that the parts not only have to support the pressure of the jib, but indeed the considerable pressure resulting from the mast as a whole), but I never got an answer...

Thank you in advance...

Take a look at the Formula 18 furlers and compare what you have to those. I would be sure that you are not stressing the system any more than we are.

Later,

I don't know the specs on your, but I have 78 sq ft reacher on mine that is a LOT bigger than the stock jib. I have 4 years on it and have had no problem. BUT if you loose the forestay your mast WILL go down. No way around. I think you are OK, Just replace forestay and shroud every 2 years if you sail a lot. Also check swages ever so often for frayed wires.

Just my 2 cents,

Doug

Talk to some F18 sailors, they will be getting rid of their furlers soon (after Feb 07 ???). I am sure you will be able to pick one up for cheap or even free.
