Part of the Land Rover series, this was the first time they let beach cats officially race. It was about a 30 mile course from Santa Barbara to Ventura,, spinnakering about 98% of the time, too bad it was 5-8 kts! There was 4 I-20s, a Tornado, a Hobie Tiger, and me and my partner on a Prindle 19. The Tornado beat everybody, but despite our full spin with the lashed together windsurfer mast pole, including the Lancome mesh tote bag to stuff it in, we beat two I-20's by about 20 min. and 40 min! I guess pointing the right direction DOES matter....

It was great having you out there with us! I posted a write up to:
http:\\www.thebeachcats.com

It has a pic of our track.

If you have a gps track recorded, send it to HobieGary...he is compiling them into an animation to re-play the whole race on a Google Earth screen.

Yeah, I remember seeing you out there in the distance as your red spin faded from sight....
No GPS track, mine crapped out 15 min. into the race.

There was a 30+ mile off shore race in So. California for beachcats. It was an abbreviated course of

The Hardway.

You can see details about it as told by Mike Dobbs on thebeachcats.com . Mike thoroughly trounced on the pack of mostly Inter 20's in a calm, light air day in this downwind spinnaker run. Say, aren't the I20's supposed to rule in light air??

The fleet consisted of 4 Inter 20.s (Nacra 20.s), a Hobie Fox, a Prindle 19, and a lone Tornado. You can see an animation of the first few boats to finish on a nice new animation program that Glenn Brown has provided at
http://www.fulltiltphoto.com/gpx/index.html?Hardway.xml

I was crew on Carl Teyssier's Team San Diego. This is the first of a a three race series that, just this season has been opened up to beachcats. I hope that more participants will begin to show up for these Pacific Coast off shore races.

Used to love racing against them in my 6.0 (no spin) in light air, upwind or down. Could frequently beat them boat for boat. Now on the I20 I find myself saying things like

if we the 6.0 in these conditions we'd be kicking a**

in the light stuff.

It's an AJAX + Google Maps API program that reads GPS tracks in the .gpx file format. You can add your own tracks using the instructions.
