2010 Wave NAs -- Great News!!!
We have held the Wave NAs once before in conjunction with the I-LYA Bay Week Regatta (Largest Fresh Water Regatta since the turn of the Last Century) and Put-in-Bay, Ohio, and have held a number of North Coast Championships.
But, this year there is a huge change in the schedule that should be really great. I-LYA has changed it from a Mon-Wed schedule to Friday through Sunday (a three-day weekend regatta).
And we are going to host the Wave North Americans along with it.
We really hope to bring a lot of Waves to this great island full of family fun, bars, entertainment, wineries, breweries, and all sort of entertainment.., and of course, GREAT SAILING.
By the way, want to visit Put-in-Bay by golf cart to have a look around? Just go to http:/
This is pretty incredible. The original video starts out at the Miller Ferry Dock. You can click to see the lighthouse, or click to go downtown. The lighthouse is boring, so go downtown. All along the way it will point out streets where you turn by clicking the arrow link. And for some of the points of interest there are links, i.e., Perry's Cave Family Fun Center, Heineman's Winery, Chocolate Fudge Factory Museum, etc.
You can run yourself all over the island, and the music in the background is all the local entertainers, including the awesome Pat Dailey.
The dates for the NAs will be Aug 6-8 (Fri-Sun) There is also a 21-mile distance race (Sandusky Steeplechase) from Sandusky Sailing Club to PIB on Thursday morning -- start is 9AM.
That may be a bit much for a Wave, but if you have any other boat, this is a great one. And there are two awesome perpetual trophies, one for the first across the line, the other for first on handicap.
Here is the website for I-LYA http://i-lya.org/
Here are some good links on Mary's and My home there

Sure hope we see a LOT OF WAVES There this year. And for the Steeplechase, let's get those hot cats back on the water again.
Oh and by the way, every Sunday we have an antique car parade. Here is a glimps of one of them
http:/
We have three cars, 1908 Model T Speedster, 29 Mercedes Roadster Replica, and a 29 Model A 4-door Ford Sedan
See ya there,
Rick
We have already booked rooms and camping at PIB Yacht Club is fine too.
Don't forget that the big cats can stay after the Steeplechase and race Bay Week too, not just Waves.
Hi Rick,
I-LYA still has not sent flags to Rotens or me for last year's Steeplechase race. I have made them aware of it and the initial response from last year's I-LYA Commodore was that he didn't get results for the beachcats and acted like he had no idea that we raced. This year's I-LYA race chairman (the guy who is making all the changes to Bay Week)is aware of the problem and is trying to get something done about it, so far with no success. You might want to check the perpetuals when you get back because I'll bet that they have not engraved them with last year's results either. I would be glad to race again but not if they will not acknowledge us or give us what we won last year (we certainly paid enough for a couple lousy flags). I think they are working hard to correct the myriad foobars from years past but I thought you should know about this situation. Bad enough this happens to
locals
; even more embarrassing if it happens to long distance travelers.
Mike,
Totally new regime. Forget last year.., get over it. Hell, they wanted Scarpelli to buy his flag, instead of awarding it.
Just a really bad, bad commode or commodore.
All new people, all new schedule. Should be great. Don't get all bent out of shape because of an indiot powerboater commodore and miss a great regatta this coming year.
Its been our experience that it only takes ONE bad experience to destroy a regatta...doubly so if you have to travel any distance for the event.
Unfortunately, We have learned that lesson a couple of times...If the mistakes are self inflicted and should have been avoided... hell could freeze over before sailors return.
We never had much luck with the
water over the damn
Don't let the past experience ruin a great regatta line. Trust them! ...
You might want to get the new leadership to directly apologize to the sailors from last year and tell them what will be different... otherwise... people will view the event as a waste of their time (and money).
A few years ago... the Chesapeake's big fall distance race allowed a hard head to serve as PRO. He refused to listen to the other RC members and launched the fleet in light air and did not make provisions to shorten the course. 170 boats registered and started... ... 6 finished in the time limit. In order to save the event... they wound up issuing an apology and promised corrections. The RSA stepped in as well with adult supervision. The regatta survived but they still lost 30 boats the next year.
Just sayin...
You can't fix stupid... but it works both ways.
For years and years, the Buzzard Hobie regatta was considered the best regatta in New England, if for no other reason than the great wind conditions. It only took one (really, really, really) bad year (of OA/RC) to make people not want to ever come back, regardless of whether a new group of folks could take over.
Personally, I don't think that attitude reflects any better on the boycotters than the boycottees. EDIT: At least, not when the OA is honestly trying to overcome the issues, not blindly ignoring mistakes of the past.
Mike
Rick,
First of all, I am not
bent out of shape
and dismissing my concerns with a
Hell, get over it
is part of the problem - sounds like you could do PR for the I-LYA. Second, the long list of problems we had at last year's Steeplechase race and Bay week regatta was hardly due just to
an idiot powerboater commodore
. Third, after experiencing this regatta to get worse year after year (why do you think attendance is so much lower than it used to be? - I'm hardly the only one who has noticed the problems) it would be foolish to forget about it. Burn me once, shame on you - burn me over and over, shame on me. I think way too many people DO forget about the problems each year and that is why we keep experiencing them. Since you did not do the Steeplechase last year you may not know that Rotens and I had to sail around for about 45 minutes after finishing because the powerboats blocking the club ramp had to be moved. Ask Kathy Clark what she was told when she asked that the boats be moved so that we could sail in.
I have a large drawer full of flags that I never look at so that is not the issue. The issue is that this large organization cannot even produce a couple flags months (and months) after being informed and acknowledging that they should do so. If they cannot get that done, why should I think that they can get bigger, more important changes made? As long as no one holds the organizers responsible for even the basics of a regatta (and remember, this event is supposed to be the premiere event of I-LYA), then we probably will never get what should be delivered. Maybe you do not remember the scoring hassles (where are the results posted, why are they wrong, why did it take so long, etc.) but that should be pretty simple to produce accurately, timely, and to all competitors. Yes, the people and fun times are worth coming for alone, but you risk alienating a lot of folks who travel a long distance if they experience anything like what we did last year. I was trying to let you know about the problems so that you can make early contact with the responsible people to make sure that things do improve this year. Right now, I have evidence that they are not and that some early intervention by influential locals is indicated.
