We have the largest fleet of 5.5 Unis in the country. They are fast and basically bullet proof. If you are going to race competitively, get a new(er) boat.

Enjoy.

I raced a uni last year. It was a 1995, and I DID use a chute, but only for distance racing and only in winds under about 15. I feel this was more a function of my experience level (I was scared, so I took it down), the mast (older-style ultra-light aluminum) and the sail (21 sq m/225 sq ft Inter 18 sail) than the boat's ability to carry a chute in more wind. I never did get a snuffer; on the other hand, the open tramp without jibsheets leaves lots of options for your bag and spin sheets. I used a 12' pole and sheeted to the shrouds with turning blocks on the main beam.

Feel free to ask any questions.

sail fast

2000 or newer seem to be the fastest. These boats are carbon boats (mast, rudders, boards). The Uni Fleet races one design, so no chutes are used. One guy put a chute/EO Snuffer setup on his boat. It handled fine.
