In case you haven't noticed yet, Rick has posted story and pix. Go to our welcome page and click on the links in the teaser paragraph. If you don't know how to get to our welcome page, it is www.catsailor.com. Or you can click on the Catamaran Sailor logo at upper left of this page.

At the time he posted the story, the race committee had not yet posted results, so he did the best he could.

Results are now up at http://acatworlds.com/res/worlds/2007_A-Cat_Worlds_Championship.html

Anyone know what the redress issue is at 4th and 5th?

Am I mistaken, or is this one of the most incredible groups ever to share a racecourse? Certainly there hasn't been such a gathering of my idols in my lifetime! Somebody should be making a movie of this event! Rick, Mary, and Tom, Thanks for your coverage! <img src=

With the help of the many photos available on-line I tried to draw down a list of the materials utilized by the TOP 15
after two races:

1 42/USA 250 GUCK, LARS Guck A3/Glaser/Hall
2 03/AUS 1 ASHBY, GLENN Flyer MK2/Ashby/Fiberfoam
3 09/NED 250 BOOTH, MITCH Vectorworks XJ/Glaser/???
4 01/AUS 2 ANDERSON, SCOTTY Flyer MK2/Ashby/Fiberfoam
5 82/NZL 232 PHILPOTT, MURRAY Flyer MK2/Ashby/Fiberfoam
7 NONE/USA 69 MELVIN, PETE Nacra A3/Glaser/Hall
7 51/NED 3 HOEKSTRA, SJOERD Tool/Ashby/Saarberg
8 05/GER 12 BEIKE, DONALD Flyer MK2/Landenberger/Fiberfoam
9 24/SUI 202 DU BOIS, LUC Scheurer G5/Ashby/???
10 14/ITA 2 CALABRIA, EUGENIO Flyer MK2/Ullman/Fiberfoam
11 93/USA 198 STRUBLE, MATT Flyer MK1/Goodall/???
12 76/USA 269 OGLETREE, CHARLIE VMI XJ/Glaser/???
13 04/USA 232 ATKINS, CHAD (sorry no photos)
14 53/USA 110 KINDER, PHILIP Flyer MK2/???/???
15 57/AUS 308 LANDENBERGER, ANDREW Marstrom M5/Landenberger/Marstrom

I hope to complete the blank spaces with yr help.
Then summarizing:

Platforms:
no 6 Flyer MK2, no 2 A3, no 2 XJ, no 1 Tool, no 1 Scheurer G5, no 1 Marstrom, no 1 Flyer MK1 (no 1 unknown)

Sails:
no 5 Ashby, no 4 Glaser, no 2 Landenberger, no 1 Ullman, no 1 Goodall (no 2 unknown)

Masts:
no 5 Fiberfoam, no 2 Hall, no 1 Saarberg, no 1 Marstrom (no 6 unknown)

Let me add two considerations:
a) Mitch Booth and Charlie Ogletree chose a Glaser main!!!
b) Matt Struble proved to be once more an outstanding helmsman: with not many hours on the A class and sailing the oldest boat/sail he is presently 11th.

talk to Charlie, he is sailing a glaser main, but I believe this is one that he worked with Jay to build from a Ullman Zucolli Sail. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is what I have heard from the event.

Re: Redress in the second race for Scotty Anderson and Murray Philpott:
Apparently, the RC was a little slow in getting the Charlie flag up at the C mark to indicate a change of A mark. The flag went up after Scotty and Murray had rounded C, so they were not aware of the mark change and were given redress.

At completion of the first race on Tuesday, Rick has figured accumulated scores for the first three races of the regatta. This is not official from the RC, and he figured them for the top nine boats.

Positions after three races:
1. Glenn Ashby, 5 points
2. Lars Guck, 6
3. Pete Melvin, 14
4. Mitch Booth, 21
5. Murray Philpott, 23
5. Luc Dubois, 23
7. Matt Struble, 28
8. Charlie Ogletree, 31
9. Chad Atkins, 34

The charlie flag went up when the lead boats where 5-6 lengths from the C mark. The redress was that it should have been sooner. the boats rounded about 20 seconds after the flag was raised, so the first five boats went the wrong direction and 20 or so followed after that. This comes from the race committee.

Okay, second race on Tuesday.
Positions the first time around the weather mark:

1. Guck
2. Scotty Anderson
3. Ashby
4. Booth
5. Dubois
6. Ogletree
7. Cam Lewis, USA
8. Mark Bellerman, USA
9. Struble
11. Beike

Following that group, a batch of 25 or 30 boats went around the mark -- too many to get numbers on.

RC is reporting wind of 7 1/2 knots, still out of the north.

Finish positions for Race 2 on Tuesday:

1. Guck
2. Ashby
3. Scotty Anderson
4. Struble
5. Melvin
6. Booth (but he was OCS)
7. Ogletree
8. Dubois
9. Landenberger

Rick's rough standings for the four races so far:

1. Lars Guck, 7 points
1. Glenn Ashby, 7 points
3. Pete Melvin, 19 points
4. Luc Dubois
5. Matt Struble
6. Charlie Ogletree

NOTE: Mitch Booth would have been in 4th, but his OCS messed that up, and also makes it hard to figure the points of the boats following him.

That's it for today's racing. Watch for Rick's report later today, and, hopefully, official results.

Great for the recap of equipment. I took a lot of pix this morning but no one to ask questions about what they are using.
I will take your list down tomorrow and get pix of each boat number.

Is it typical to only sail two races a day and only one on Friday? Seems to me with people traveling from around the world to race for a week they could get a lot more sailing in than that.

I actually believe that this is the typical format for this type of event. Additionally, each race is a six leg race on a longer World championship format.

It's in the a class world championship rules
max two races per day / so in case of breakages you still might not have not lost everything ....

in other champs we sail up to 4 races / day

great pics
great coverage
mmmm should have been there....
fingers crossed for better wind next days.....

NICE!!! BTW, you're doing a great job with the coverage Rick!

Is it typical to only sail two races a day and only one on Friday?

As mentioned, it totally depends on the class (and sometimes, to the event). Here are some more examples:

If there are supplied boats with rotation, you'll have less racing because of the time required for the equipment swapping (assuming they change boats between each race, and that they go back to the beach to do that, some classes use docks, etc.).

The Olympic events have two races per day scheduled. You can run up to three in any one day, but you can never be more than one race ahead in the overall schedule.

You're absolutely right though, if you're trying to keep everyone happy, that's a key piece of information for the RC to nail down (and publish) before the event... <img src=

This was also a huge discussion on Scuttlebutt recently.

Mike

Rick

In the official results Mitch Booth is scored 12/RDG in the 4th race and not OCS as you wrote.
Can you explain what's happened in the evening?
Thanks
