Adventure Online has a new homepage design, and we have been working to repost all of the Tybee 500 videos asap for the Tybee teams that are working on sponsorship. All of the 2008 Tybee videos have been posted as well as some interviews from 07.

The homepage again: http://www.AdventureOnline.TV

In other news, Ive graduated from my training RC helicopter to the Blade 400 which is capable of flying a small camera. So far Ive managed to cut the lawn with it one crash at a time, but Ive got my fingers crossed to be able to fly good enough by May!

Brian,
Any idea why the videos don't show up for me?
I have a mac... i'm clicking watch this video from the 2008 Tybee 500... or whatever it says... and then the description comes up with a little picture on the right of the video and that's it. There is a big gap of white below the description. Is that where the video is supposed to be?
Thanks!
Look forward to seeing the Blade 400!

BK,

Is a remote blimp too slow to capture the footage? It would seem to be a little easier to fly (and could possibly carry a larger payload like a small PTZ cam, and carry it longer on one charge/fuel load)

Im guessing that a blimp wouldnt do well in a breeze. Besides, the helo is more fun, that is, between crashes its more fun.

Assuming we only have 2 knots of breeze it might work...those things are painfully slow. Maybe you could tether it or something.

I nominate Todd Hart's boat as the one that gets tethered to the blimp. You'll get a good view of the whole fleet if the camera is mounted on the front of the blimp 😛

Now Todd....I know you're not going to let him get away with that!

Tad's pretty lanky, we'll have to catch him first.

I'll steal his cell phone and we'll use it as bait for a trap. Lee, bring a big net, preferrably made from chain mail. Todd, get a big hammer with a 5 foot handle and a wooden head. Derek, if you're out there, bring your tazer, Allie, and 18 feet of 3mm Robline Ocean 3000, and 3 rubber chickens. Jake, we'll need your cape and superhero outfit, as well as 2 gallons of resin and hardener (be sure to get the fast dry stuff). We'll also need the controller for an Xbox 360. Brian Karr, can you please bring a camera? It needs to be a polaroid camera though, we don't want Big Brother scanning the airwaves and stealing the photos from your digital stuff. Finally, we'll need THE Chuck, 2 bottles of Jaeger, 4 bottles of rum, a case of diet coke, and 17 snickers bars.

Like I said, Tad's lanky, so this is going to be tricky.

I was thinking the blimp could be tethered for the start, or towed behind a jetski or something. The PTZ could be used to adjust the camera while in motion.

Is the camera on the helo PTZ or fixed? Might make flying and aiming a problem...

Is the helo going to follow the fleet or just be around start/finish areas?

Are the competitors wearing helmet/eyewear to protect against kamakazi helos?

something like this:
[Linked Image] here's a sample spec sheet (1.5 lbs doesn't sound like too much to carry aloft)

tethered to a large balloon or zepplin (for aerodynamics). You could even run the power/control cable down the tether so you don't have to use RC/batteries for the camera.

75' of tether should be long enough to get the camera high up, even when towed at reasonable speed (15 kts) depending on bouyancy of zeppelin.

$500 USD for the whole setup (minus helium cost), which is probably less than one helo without camera.

Come to think of it, if there were one of these setups to windward of A mark, leeward of C mark, and the PRO boat, you'd have quite a good set of vantage points for a bouy race, too...

my very cursory calculations (you engineers need to work out the specifics) seem to indicate that 2 cubic meters of helium should be able to lift the camera and balloon I mentioned before.

That sounds like a pretty decent sized balloon... too big to strap on the racing boats, but not too big as a stationary or jet-ski towed platform...

I've been beating up on him on SA.He's actually got people there convinced he sails and knows something about it. <img src="<>/confused.gif" alt="confused" title="confused" height="15" width="15" /> He even dragged you into it( see pic on SA)He's just got a swelled head 'cuz his name is actually on a race pre-reg .
Those blimps are slow, but still faster than a Peckertrack.

Trey,
I love your plan, the simple ones always work.
He's lanky all right and graceful like an Ostrich.
Tad,
You better watch how you talk to your boss!
Tawd
