There be wind in this here town.

Today, a few folks who've arrived early here in Clearwater Florida for the 2002 Area D Qualifier and Florida Multihull Championship got out on the water for a shakedown and "get acquainted" race. The results don't count toward the official regatta, which starts on Saturday, but you wouldn't know it by the way the little fleet pushed the start line.

A couple of Hobie 20s, 18 Magnums, and a lone I-20 found themselves amongst a knife-fighting F-18 fleet - a Tiger, an I-18, and a Nacra F-18 were out for blood. At the end of a couple of hours, in and out of the Gulf of Mexico, the 18-footers were on top and the I-20 was the only other finisher. Big waves in the channel, puffs in the teens, and some unsuspected shallow water severely culled the herd. At one point, I was concerned to see a boat go over some distance away - as I drew closer, it became evident that the skipper and crew were ok as they walked from behind the trampoline, wading in the knee-deep water that had caused the capsize.

It was great to see all the boats arriving today, and I can’t wait to see who else is showing up in the morning. I have to say that this is the nicest facility I’ve seen, with a great clubhouse, a huge stretch of beach, lots of secure storage, HOT showers, and SHAZAM! I got handed a wireless network card for registration and scoring. This is cool! The 2003 Alter Cup here next April is going to be quite an event.

The forecast is looking good, if a little cool, for the next two days, so we’re looking forward to a great event – if you can get here, please do. First shape at noon Saturday, ALL cats welcome!

John
