Lots of nice footage available at: http://www.arubaregatta.com/video.asp

Requires MS Media player 9.

One of the blooper clips have a.. instructive.. righting sequence.
There is some very nice Capricorn F18 footage as well. Most comments are in dutch, so be prepared for a language lesson as well.

That Inter 18 upside down footage is a great example of how not to right a cat.....

Aruba Blooper

Even the eventually successful 6th attempt to right the boat was more a case of luck than judgement.

There was a very good thread on this on the F18 forum (I think)

their mast was full of water. Apart from that the crew was certainly not very bright

Couldn't they have pulled the boat backwards with the crew sitting on the stern? The sideways thing just doesn't seem very bright at all.

P.S. I think that was Papiamento(sp?) not Dutch. Just my linguistic guess; I speak neither one.

Note to anyone that finds themselves in a similar situation. While being towed sideways, the sails want to spin the bow toward the tow boat. With the tow boat pulling from the side, the loads are quite high (as evidence by the amount of throttle you can hear the RIB applying) The simplist and easiest way to right the boat with the least chance for damage is to tie the line to the front beam (center ... around the beam and to the mast post (between the bottom of the mast and the beam). Tow the turtled vessle backwards and into the wind if possible. It will come up like a porpoise.

It was definately Dutch.

The accent was of the Westland an area between The Hague and Rotterdam. They weren't locals.

Jake,
That was the way I was talking about. Sounds good but I have never seen it done. Anyone have firsthand experience righting a turtled boat in this manner?
