Is a title and registration necessary for a 20 ft beach catamaran in Florida? I don't recall this before.

Unless the law has been changed, registration is not required for sailboats of ANY size in Florida if they do not have an engine (other than sails, of course).

Yep, I just checked the laws, and that is true. All non-motorized vessels are exempt from from registration. However, if your boat is 16 foot or over, you are required to have a title for it (probably only important when you go to sell it). And even then, why do you need a title if you don't have to register it?

I don't think we have ever had a

title

for any of our sailboats in Florida.

when you apply for a title, they get tax money out of you from the sale.

Probably do need to register your trailer, though....

Trailer yes, It's used on the road. Boat no. A bill of sale is all that's needed. However make sure your boat has a vin.# on the transom and on the bill of sale so you can prove ownership. I've seen transoms rebuilt and the numbers not replaced.

Chip has someone told you different?

You may want to consider doing two separate Bill of Sales. One for the trailer and one for the boat. That way you only pay tax on the items you are registering/titling. Works really well here in MD.

Here thery're a little more laid back than some states. The trailer can have a Vin.# or you can simply call it homemade. The Reg. fee is based on the actual weight of the trailer. Trailers weighting over 2000lbs. are titled.

Is he keeping it in state, or taking it to some other state?
