Will be staying at Isle of Palms July 14-21 and bringing my Miracle 20. Unfamiliar with Charleston -- can anyone recommend an area to sail (harbor, beach, etc...??). Also any good sailing schools in that area where I could improve my skills? Any insight appreciated. Thanks!

Water's warm and the sailing's good here in SC pretty much year round.

I sail on occasion from Folly beach (about 9 miles south of Isle of Palms on the water - about 20 miles via roads and bridges) and in the harbor when the surf has gone mad. The surf is usually managable and the Isle of Palms typically has less surf that Folly. The harbor is great for sailing if you can handle chop (no problem in H20) and the occasional rogue wave. It's good when the surf is too much or you need a break from it. You might want to check out James Island Yacht Club as they have a decent cat launch into the harbor - not sure about visitor useage (www.jiyc.org). I believe that Ashley Marina ((843) 722-1996), opposite JIYC (on the city side), has a public launch into the harbor for a fee. I remember a thread about the Isle of Palms before and there was beach access from at least one hotel on the Island....can't find it though - it was a good while ago. It's not unreasonable to launch from the Marina and sail to the Isle of Palms either.
