I'm dating a girl who lives in St. Pete and would like to take her sailing. My boat still needs the rudders bolted on and I won't be able to get to that for a couple weeks (due to work and school).

Are there any places in the St. Pete area that rent catamarans? I'd even sail something else if it was nice (this pretty well excludes Windriders).

That's Glenn's place. As far as I know, he's retired his G-Cat fleet and uses only the Windriders now. I've sailed the Windrider before and was not impressed...

Go to Glen's "Sail Honeymoon" concession on the Dunedin Causeway and look at the newer Windrider 17. This is a MUCH improved boat over the simpler 16 footer. The 17 has a furling jib, room inside for 2-3 with room for more on the wings, and handles like a real boat. It's stable, quick to tack, and powerful.

Plus, Glen is a nice guy and Dunedin is a great place to sail. Use this forum to let the locals know you're coming and we'll show you a good time. Just head over to the islands a look for cats...

I was trying to find a place to rent a catamaran in St. Pete since the girl I'm dating lives there. My catamaran hasn't come off the beach in about two years and I plan on keeping it that way (also- it currently doesn't have rudders). I've been to Dunedin and talked to Glen when he was selling off his old G-Cat fleet and switching entirely to Windriders. I'd rented one of those a couple years back in Key West and it was a crappy little hunk of trash, to say the least.

Hence my hesitation to take a nice girl out on a horrid little boat. But... we've both got finals next week so we're just going to go minature golfing instead Thanks for the heads-up on the new WR17 catman, maybe I'll rent one later. Hopefully I'll have rudders on my G-Cat sometime next week and it won't quite resort to that...

I have no opinion about Glenn, and have never rented a cat in the St. Pete area, but there are other two places in Clearwater that I know of. One is Clearwater Community Sailing:

http://www.clearwatercommunitysailing.org/rentals.html

They rent Hobie Waves for $25.00 / hr. You also have to pay $10.00/day per person for a "day membership".

The Sheraton Sand Key Resort rents some kind of Hobies. Phone (727) 595-1611. No idea how much they charge.
