Celeb Sailors sought for 2 b publ'd website
Quickly browsed the threads and found some useful info already ( Post: Sailing Songs sailing songs), which is sometimes a nice start for what I need.
I am currently working on a sailing & other 'water-related' website, as I am a passionate sailor myself (sorry guys, no cat although I do like the speed and hard work). One of the sections will contain pages on celebrities who are/were into sailing, such as Humphrey Bogart, Neil Young or John Glenn (astronaut). Celebs can be from all walks of life/fame; writers, artists, musicians but also politicians, astronauts, scientists or ...
If any of you know of any celebrities, please let me know. Please include as much (specific) info (keywords!!!) as possible such as i.e.
- names of boats,
- regattas in which they competed,
- specific journeys/logs,
- websites (or other publications) with interviews in which they also reflect on sailing
- etcetera etcetera.
All suggestions are welcomed. I'll expect most of you will understand, my site focuses around true sailing & other 'water-related', so it's all WIND-sailing and not motorboatin'. You can also suggest celebs who like to wildwater-raft, waterski or scuba-dive or any other water-related sport, as long as it's not motorboatin' for the thrill of the motorboat.
Robert Urich sailed with our club for many years on a Hobie 17

Dave
Actors Buddy Ebsen and James Arness were both very active racing sailors on big cats.
And also rock star Bob Segar. I think he had a sailing-related song, too.
You can find some comments about Buddy Ebsen on this forum by using the Search in the bar at the top of this page. Type in "Buddy Ebsen" for key word and "all posts." (Sorry, I don't know how to do a link.)
I did a story in "Catamaran Sailor" about Buddy Ebsen and his sailing exploits last year after he died. If you want it, e-mail me, mary@catsailor.com.
Ted Turner is certainly a celebrity of sorts (and often out of sorts), and he is also an ardent sailor and former winner of the America's Cup.
President John F. Kennedy did a lot of sailing out of the family's Hyannis compound on Cape Cod.
Dave, Mary, Thanks Exactly the kind of info I need. Was unsure on Bob Seger, knew of the Kennedy's (remarkably also a lot of the Kennedy ladies) and didn't yet have the others.
As to Mary's most kind offer on the Buddy Ebsen article: I will defntly take you up on this and I am most endebted. A multitude of thanks. On your mention of the Kennedy's, I know that also some of the Kennedy ladies are passionate about sailing, which I find remarkable. Your mention of them, and my association with the lady Kennedys triggered the Question (Why) Is sailing a stag thing? for which I've just started a new thread.
Furthermore, I must apologize for barging in here without a proper introduction. So keen on posting my question that I totally forgot to compliment founders (and contributors) of this out-of-sight for puttin life and liveliness into this websight (again no typo). Glad I've found it and hope to be able to contribute some valuable posts. Hope all of you get to me know a bit better soon.
Although My Bio is meant for this, common decency urges me to shortly introduce myself. Passionate sailor ... Sorry not a Cat, but a 22ft Etap, but I do at times envy all yee catsailors for the close contact with the elements. After all, sailing is not about gettin a tan, it's about gettin wet. I'm 35, born in the US, bred in the Netherlands where I still live. Most recently employed in ICT, ex- a lot of other trades and professions due to my wandering spirit. Currently recovering from car-crash. Anxious father-to-be (first time), 'berth'-day
expected the end of May.
As to my original question, Who knows Celeb Sailors, all other suggestions are of course still more than welcome.
I beleive Bo Derek sailed a Hobie and her father was a public relations executive for Hobie.

Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran sailed a maxi called Drum. I believe they lost the keel during a race, capsized, and had to be rescued.
Crosby, Stills and Nash sailed. David Crosby had his own boat.
Before his accident, actor Christopher Reeve (Superman) had a 42 foot sailboat.
William Buckley Jr. political columnist and writer had several boats. He wrote several books about his saling adventires too. Airborne, Atlantic High and Racing through Paradise. Have your Thesaurus by your side if you read them.
Don't forget the obvious -- Jimmy Buffett.
Geraldo Rivera is into sailing and did a documentary about sailing his boat around the world. He and his family (and a film crew) would fly in and meet the professional crew taking care of his boat, then fly home and leave the long passages to the paid hands. I can't remember the name or size of his boat. David Crosby sailed his wooden cutter for years before he frittered away his resources on drugs and landed in jail. His boat fell into disrepair, but I believe he recovered it after he got his life back together. His love of sailing is well documented in his book, "Long Time Gone." In fact, I think he introduced Bob Segar to sailing. Check his book for confirmation. Also, Walter Cronkite retired from broadcasting to go cruising. Of course, future president (we hope) John Kerry is a windsurfer.

Got two royals:
His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain; (HM King Juan Carlos Trophy)
His Majesty King Harald of Norway
His Majesty has made a name for himself in a number of national and international sailing competitions. As Crown Prince, he represented Norway several times in the Olympic Games, won the Gold Cup Races in 1968, and took first place in the Kiel Week Races in 1972. He was number two in the World championship in the half-ton class in 1982. In the summer of 1987, he won the world championship with his new yacht, the one-ton "Fram X", which was a gift from the Norwegian business community on his fiftieth birthday. The following year the yacht and its crew won a bronze medal in the world championship in San Francisco.
Gee, thanks you all. What a lively crew aboard this site. Well, no wonder I guess seeing as that all of you are ACTION-sailors.
Due to various requests I've had thru this & other forums, I've decided to put up a TEMPORARY page at my site with the full list of which celebs are on a to-do (or already done) list. You can find it here.
You can of course continue to suggest celebs here on the catsailor forum, as I will keep a close watch.
For those of you who asked me, I am sorry that there is no real content yet at my website. Nor will there be any for at least one or two months. Why? I see no point in opening up "half a shop" with lots of promises and little content.
Thank you all for your patience.

By any chance, have you read any of his (3) books?
