This past week, the Los Angeles Times took a little-noticed step that could have a profound impact on your children’s and grandchildren’s future: it decided to ban climate change deniers from its pages. If this step catches on and spreads to other media outlets, it could finally lead us away from the distraction of the phony, manufactured “debate” over the existence and causes of the global climate disruption and actually get down to the real work of confronting this challenge.

[W]hen deciding which letters should run among hundreds on such weighty matters as climate change, I must rely on the experts -- in other words, those scientists with advanced degrees who undertake tedious research and rigorous peer review.
And those scientists have provided ample evidence that human activity is indeed linked to climate change. Just last month, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change -- a body made up of the world's top climate scientists -- said it was 95% certain that we fossil-fuel-burning humans are driving global warming. The debate right now isn't whether this evidence exists (clearly, it does) but what this evidence means for us.

Simply put, I do my best to keep errors of fact off the letters page; when one does run, a correction is published. Saying

there's no sign humans have caused climate change

is not stating an opinion, it's asserting a factual inaccuracy. full article

Newspapers not printing “factual inaccuracies” – what a concept!

Nicely done Tony! I do appreciate a properly executed snarky post.

And cleaner air is a bad thing.

Hey Dave, I will probably be off work on the Friday of your race in Sarasota. Do you need any help?

You better believe we do!!! We need volunteers to work the weigh station Friday. I've thrown my name in the hat to work Friday morning but I'm sailing Buzzelli so I'm out when my skipped says it's time to go. It's pretty easy it's just a PIA telling people they can't bring wet boats to the weigh station then dealing with them get all upity when you tell them they aren't getting weighed today.

Unfortunately, the

climate change deniers

have politically won. We have already passed the 'tipping point' to a much warmer world. The permafrost in western Sibera is melting at a furious pace, with more moderate melting in all other permafrost areas. Methane hydrate deposits are degassing in many areas. Greenland is melting like a popsicle dropped on a hot sidewalk. The pH of the ocean is changing. I could go on endlessly..., but what's the point. Currently, there has been some short term data variation that the deniers will gleefully point to as 'proof', to confuse the public. They will continue to bully and blather their 'facts', until it is obvious to nearly everyone that something is wrong with the weather.

To have any real chance, the world would have to shut down every coal burning power plant and stop using oil, NOW! -Then the world economy would collapse, and billions of humans would starve to death. Of course, if we do nothing, eventually agriculture will fail, and billions of humans will starve to death.

So you might as well have a beer and go sailing, until the food runs out.
