White carbon mast have a tendency to show wear and tear while black ones tend to cover this up. Does a black carbon mast (factory finish) degrade in the sun (environment) anymore than say a white mast?

Mark

I have had my black mast for 2.5 years. It is still in great shape and seems no different than a white mast. I haven't touched it with wax/polish or anything. I have touched up a few spots with paint that came with the boat.

some epoxies do not hold up well in the sun and heat. most epoxy does not have a uv filter.

Mark,

My understanding is as follows:-

Carbon masts that are made from pre-preg carbon can have a UV filter in the pre-preg resin so they do not need to be protected from the UV with Paint.

If the resin is not pre-preg it will need some kind of cover. Either a seperate clear UV filter or pigmented paint as a two pack polyurethane.
