Having a build better suited to a lineman (250 lbs) I was curious what is the maximum weight that one can be competitive in the A class? I have read sail shape accomodates all sizes but I have to doubt that it is without limit.

You will be a rocket upwind!

You will probably need an all carbon boat to cope with the loads.

Down wind will be a different story. If you get a spi kit to your A-cat you will solve that problem.

Note, not all A-cats can cope with the extra loads from the spi. Flyer and Marstrom A-cats has been using spi without problems.

Dough Graf was almost your weight range and was among the first at the weather mark when he was sailing in the worlds!

The weight range is wide, from 65 kg to 100+.

Dear Mr. Right Guard,

You sound like an opportunity for a new 18HT sailed singlehanded! No jib, but 4 or 5 hands needed to douse the chute with nobody to steer. I am still working out how to steer my Bim 2000 A-cat when chute dowsing- when its just me and the Velcro. Dave Carlson- 190 pounds.

how does the weight help upwind? I can see that in heavy winds but in light winds a lighter weight skipper would beat you - right?

Sailor.
