Can someone give me an approximate cost of replacing my Aluminum mast on my Inter 18 with a carbon mast? Would I simply contact my Inter dealer or are there alternative sources for obtaining a carbon mast. Also, what are the performance and weight benefits of 'upgrading' to a carbon mast?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the information. I think I will try and improve my sailing technique to increase my boats performance as I cant afford $3,000 for a mast right now.

I have a carbon mast on my Uni and love it. It's easy to step and right. It doesn't hobby horse and it's light. Negatives include difficulty to depower and shape sail. I would definately do it again, however I might not if I had to pay additional $$ to replace an aluminum mast that was still working. You have stated what I say to myself many times when thinking of getting new

stuff

and that is that if I want to go faster, I can first learn how to sail better. Most of us have much room for improvement.

However, if it is for comfort or safety (and you get a little faster), go for it. This

stuff

is cheap compared to some hobbies (rationalization if you need it).

Let me ask you this question; I have contemplated either going with the carbon mast upgrade on the Inter 18 or waiting a couple seasons and simply buying a 'slightly used', well-tuned Inter 20 (which obviously comes with a carbon mast). I love the Inter 18 but I have a hard time replacing a perfectly good mast (and my wife said no 'bleeping' way). I am teaching my kids to sail and hence, I normally have extra weight on the boat (over 425 lbs). So, maybe sound logic would dictate not getting a carbon mast for the Inter 18, work presently on my technique (which needs a lot of work), and then get the larger Inter 20 that already has a carbon mast. Righting the boat and stepping the mast is a big factor since I hope my kids will sail (race) this boat as they grow up.
