I hate to be bitchy, but what are the dates?

Some of us might attend these events if we didn't have to be clairvoyant. Two weeks ago we hauled all the way from Columbia SC to Tampa and ran a race at Dunedin. Only 5 or 6 boats, but it was still worth the trip to sail at a great location.

Still, it is very hard to put together a comprehensive list of regattas, with their associated dates, and plan accordingly.

Am I the only one who has trouble with this?

No. There is a forum here, but it certainly is not being used as the resource it could be.

The Gaulden Reed Summer Sizzler, that's a grea title. Tells you -nothing- of any usefull info.

I never majored in Comunication but seems to me, if you want people to show up, two things need to be present and repeated in every mention of any regatta, 1. Where 2. When. Something like Daytona Beach, June 21-22.

BTW, I'm working so I can't make it but I can't even remember all the other July and Aug regattas I have to try to bid around. I really f'd up my June schedule because I didn't know the dates and it takes too long to look them up. The only regatta I remember next (thanks to Rick Lowen yelling it out at Kelly Park) is Wild Cat Oct 4...(Lake Eustis, north of Orlando)

Here's some for you Florida boys...

GYC races twice a month. This coming weekend (IE tomorrow) we have races.

If there is nothing going on around the state you always have GYC.

A list like this that includes other East Coast events or even all US events on one list, with locations would be ideal.

All in one location that is easy to find and has links to the organizers.

I don't think that exists and I'm sure it would take someone really dedicated to keep it up.

This forum is the best one by far. Still, I think the regatta list might be better.

The Harken list seems confusing at best. Where does that come from?

Not bitching because it is a whole lot better than it was in the past.

Thanks Robi, I will be leaving my house for Bombay tomorrow about 08:30 am. We don't leave JFK until about 9pm. I'd like to get my bids in before I go as the computers over there are sketchy at best... You can post the dates here and I can check this forum from work tomorrow afternoon, before pushback. Thanks.

1st and 3rd Saturday of each month (unless conflicting with other [larger] races).

Thanks Terry. That would be July 5 and 19 on my calendar. Is that right? Any conflicting other regattas there?

On the catsailor schedule, it seems to only have the really big stuff, not the local stuff. Which is why I posted the only local fleet stuff we have here in mid Florida, and even that didn't have the Guflport schedule on it.

Yes, 7/5 and 7/19 ...

... July 5 *may* be subject to cancellation if some other Firecracker 4th of July event gets scheduled.

Terry, the GYC schedule is usually one weekend on one weekend off. Tomorrow we have club races and its not posted on the

normal

schedule on the GYC website. I will ask around tomorrow just to confirm your information.

Sorry to hear that Pete. I'm headded out back right now to get a last sail in before going off to work tomorrow. Nice seabreeze right now, Airport is reporting 110 at 16G21! I'm going to strap on the GPS and see what I can do. If you can get to Sebring we can match race! See ya.

Well, after an hour of trying, all I could get up to was 16.9 kts on the GPS. I found if I tried to

heat it up

I would burry the bow and of course slow way down. So I tried going high, bear off in the puffs and pump the spin sheet to get the bows up on a plane, sort of. I just needed more wind I guess.

What felt the fastest was when it was time to come home, I was going too high to run the spin, so I just eased the traveler out, boards half way up, and sat at the back, pumping the main and traveler in every gust, it felt faster than going downwind with the spin. But with my GPS taped to the boom, I couldn't read it from where I was sitting, so I don't know which was faster. <img src=

Sooooo.... your experiments were for speed? Or for best VMG?

I was going purely for top speed, not VMG. My VMG would have been very good as I was running very deep with the spin up, litterally hopping over the waves when I could get in synch and pump the spin, throw my weight back and get both bows to pop up and jump over the waves instead of plowing into the backs. It was a great ride but just not as

fast

through the water. Every time I tried to turn up and get it going faster the lee bow would just burry to the beam which is like slaming on the brakes. And I had the boards up at least half way. At one point I burried both bows to the mast and thought I was going swimming but I had already dumped the spin sheet which helped save it.

I was really surprised when I finally came home on a long broad reach without the spin, I felt the boat was going much faster through the water than when going downwind with the spin. The sound of water slapping the bottom of the hulls and all the spray were both much more. The vmg on that angle was about -zero- if you are trying to go from A to C mark, but I was just going for speed.

Gotta go pack now...See ya. Go Celtics! <img src=
