I hope all our friends in Central Florida are okay after the devastating storms,(and apparently tornadoes) that went through the area early this morning while people were still asleep. <img src=

It is amazing that with all the weather technology that we have these days, nobody seemed to know that this was going to happen. <img src=

I watched the 11pm Orlando news, the weather man did mention a

...strong line of thunderstorms is coming through which could spawn tornados...

What is amazing is that all those trailer parks are not required to have some kind of warning siren system.

How many retired people, golden agers, snowbirds, are up late enough to watch the local 11 p.m. news? I know we aren't.

I have been hearing something about weather radios that have alarms that go off to wake you up if there is an alert. What IS that?

They gave the same warnings on the 6pm news but if you are 80 and in a trailer, where are you going to go? Even the Church they used for a shelter during the last hurricane was completely flattened. You can run but you can't hide.

From what I gathered from FOX news, the new weather radios can be programed so if there is a severe weather alert for your county, it will sound your radio's alarm. But remember, you have to have fresh batteries in it, just in case the power is out.

I thought those were old technology? I have a NOAA weather radio with alert. Bought it years ago for the hurricane box.

We also had one at the office, but the dang thing went off almost every afternoon (sometimes two or three times) in the summer due to thunderstorm alerts (the NOAA alerts aren't specific for the different types of problems, T-storms, tornadoes, lightning, flood, etc.). So, of course, after the second or third alert, people just turned the alert feature off.... Oops.

yeah, same thing here. Used to have a weather alert radio in our office at work. Every afternoon thunderstorm and the damn thing was going off

BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP

...damn disturbing.

That is the biggest problem here in Florida, with thunderstorms nearly every day (in the summer) you get kind of numb to it. Tornados are quite rare compared to the thunderstorms. I heard an official talking about a new

reverse 911

phone call system where they call you if there is sever weather in your area. That would work a whole lot better than the radio...especially at 3:30 am!

There are models of the radio that can be set to warn for a specific weather system. Ignore thunder storms but warn for tornados.
