[#20955]

So... we moved to Utah from S. Alabama two years ago next month. The lack of sailing (compared to the FL panhandle) has been killing me. We've been throwing around moving back and today... out of the blue.. I get an offer from my old boss. It's not as much as I make now, but it's more than I made when i worked there last. Not to mention MUCH lower cost of living.

Do we:
A - Stay here
B - Move back and sail more?

I have till Monday to decide.

If it were only about the sailing, of course, you go back.

However, life just can't be that simple, can it? You have to weigh all the work-related stuff. The basic rule of thumb is

Never go back.

I'm not in HR, but the basic idea is, once you leave, they look at you differently, there are trust issues, etc.

Of course, for every rule there are plenty of exceptions. Assuming you have a great relationship and working environment at the old place, they're paying for you to move back, there's future opportunity for growth, healthy company, etc. then it may be OK. Of course, depending how small your industry is, you don't want to cause ripples at the new place that could haunt you down the road.

How long have you been at the new place, and if you're that miserable without sailing (as I would be too), can you look at a different place?

Good luck!

Mike

Yeah John, figured you'd say that!

Well, the company I'm at is 130k+ people. Our office is small (and getting smaller). The old office is like... 8 people... and the owner of the company and I (along with all the employees) and I have stayed on very good terms. She's called me with some office stuff and I've helped whenever they asked.

The relationship between the offices (old/new) is interesting. Old office, we use the software that we support/develope in the new office. So if I go back, I will be better at my job than I was before. I think everyone in the office would be glad to have me back. I was there for five years before coming here (two years next month).

I don't know... I've got offers to go right back to crewing like I was before....

The logistics are harder now though... I've got to move three horses this time!! lol

You've been at the new place for two years? That's VERY different, move back tomorrow!!!

I read your original post too quickly, and thought this was a recent change and they were calling you back within a few months. Sorry, you can basically ignore what I said before (at least, in terms of being worried about trust, etc.). That guidance usually comes when people leave, and the old place realizes they needed you, make some sort of offer to get you back, and then they keep an eye out to replace you when it's convenient for them.

Two years on a resume doesn't stand out too much anymore.

As for the quality of life (including at work), those concerns still apply. We all spend way too much time at work, so it's very important to be happy there too...

Utah skiing vs Florida sailing?

Tough choices, any way to do a summer/winter split?

If given the choice, why would I go to UT to ski when I can go to FL to sail in the winter????
