Great Lakes best distance race is Around PEC
Guys,
Around Prince Edward County 2009 long distance race will be upon us shortly. This is THE premier long distance cat race on the great lakes. If you have never done it then you have really missed something special. It is the most fun event of the year, by far. Much more relaxing than an around the marks race. Some of the best scenery around and FANTASTIC wind conditions. This is more of an adventure than a race.
Each leg is designed so that even with minimal wind (5 knots) the legs won't be too long, 3-5 hours typically. Big multis are welcome.
Instructions are here:

Please let me know if you are coming. You don't need a shore crew.

Updated info for the 2011 event can be found on the multihull.ca multihull.ca web site.
We are having a debate on the course right now but in any event it will be fantastic.
The difference between this and the Tybee is that this event is more geared to having fun. Still a serious race but the legs are shorter, 30-50 miles and its not open ocean. You will still have time to relax at the end of the day, have some beer, and get some sleep. We move all the gear around so you don't need a shore crew. Its very friendly for people who are club F18 racers.
Also the venue is really fantastic. If you have ever sailed at CORK you know what to expect. Its also fresh warm water, probably about 70-72 degrees f.
If you have never done a distance race it is different than around the marks. It focusses more on boat speed, reading the bends in the wind as it goes around land, thermals etc than about getting the kite up and down fast.
The date has been pushed back a week to Aug 6,7,8 to accomodate a few more boats who could not do the regular date.
We are estimating about 10 boats make the line, mostly F18s but some F17s, F20C, F27s, Stilettos etc.
Also this is mostly flat water with the biggest waves being probably 3 feet. Wind conditions are typically 5-15 knots and very steady with some thermals.
This event is not a boat breaker..
Yes, we had over a dozen boats including several F27s.
We shortened it to 2 days due to other commitments.
I don't think we have any pics.
Winner was Mike Carson on a Nacra F18. I was second on a Nacra F20c.
We usually get all different types of wind but on the second day it turned into a drifter which is very unusual.
We are planning on doing it again in 2012.
